Aerosmith Exclusive to Guitar Hero

PSX Extreme
April 29, 2008

If you're looking forward to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith in late June, you're probably a fan of the legendary band and a fan of music-based video games. You probably enjoy Rock Band as well as Activision's franchise. However, if you want your Aerosmith fix, it seems you're gonna have to stick with Guitar Hero.

Only one song, "Train Kept a Rollin'," is available for Rock Band, but any Aerosmith tracks in the future will be exclusive to Guitar Hero titles. Evidently, Newsweek received confirmation from an Aerosmith publicist and Activision PR that the band's songs are cemented firmly in the GH realm "for an unspecified period of time." This only makes sense, as the band has a Guitar Hero game with their name in the title. Of course, this erases the possibility of future Aerosmith songs going up as downloadable content for Rock Band, and it begs the question: will other artists go exclusive with either GH or RB? Are the publishers scrambling about right now, trying to nail down exclusive rights? We're not sure, but we imagine the war has already begun...

Look for more on Guitar Hero: Aerosmith as time goes on; probably after the Grand Theft Auto IV craze has had a chance to die down a bit.

MIT president Susan Hockfield and her Harvard counterpart Drew Gilpin Faust were new additions at this year's "Banned in Boston" held Saturday evening at MIT's Kresge Auditorium. The spoofy musical revue also featured appearances by Mayor Tom Menino, House Speaker Sal DiMasi, Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and scientist Eric Lander, best known for his work mapping the human genome. The money raised from the show supports Urban Improv's programs to combat youth violence.

Aerosmith goes into attic to create new toy

Wicked Local Mendon, MA

Aerosmith, with Tom Hamilton, Steven Tyler, Ray Tabano and Joe Perry, plays its first show, at Nipmuc Regional High School...

MENDON - Aerosmith may only play huge arenas and stadiums now, but the Boston band had to start somewhere, and that first gig took place at none other than the Miscoe Hill School gymnasium.

The location, which was the Nipmuc Regional High School gymnasium at the time, is gaining prominence again as it is featured in the new "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" game, according to a story on the band's Web site.

Fans of the band and the game at Miscoe Hill School, from students right up through the principal, said they are pumped that the school will find itself in millions of homes when the game is released in June.

Roy Spindel, a counselor at the school, was at the first show back in 1970, when he was a Nipmuc student.

"I remember being blown away by their sound," Spindel said. "When they were playing, it seemed obvious they were going to go some place. All I could think of was, 'this is what it must feel like when the Rolling Stones play.' They sounded like they had been together forever."

The show probably cost about a dollar, Spindel said, adding that his brothers' band was supposed to play that night but they were bumped for Aerosmith....

Steven Tyler Still Rocks

Buzz Photo LLC
April 24, 2008

Rock legend Steven Tyler and a mystery male friend decided to go out for a little shopping yesterday. First Steven hit up Fred Segal in West Hollywood, California, which is where we caught up with him to snap a few fotos! Steven was looking very much the aging rock star (in a good way) in his floppy hat and torn jeans. We loved it when Steven decided to get a bit goofy and posed with his hat. Nice to see that the man’s still got it!

'Guitar Hero: Aerosmith' Lowdown -- Why The Boston Band Is Getting Its Own Game

MTV.com
April 17, 2008

(Photo: RedOctane/ Activision)

Earlier this week, game developers from Activison came through New York City to show off the upcoming "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" game and to answer the question "Why Aerosmith?"

A single band has never had a version of the best-selling "Guitar Hero" game to itself. But Aersomith, at least in name, is getting just that. Aaron Habibipour, a producer on the game, told MTV News that the famous Boston band got the gig because they are one of the top-five "holy grail" groups, according to music fans polled by Activision.

Technically, "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" — which ships for the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3 and Wii in June — isn't just Aersomith. The game will feature more than 40 songs, with 60 percent being hits from the band's decades-long career. The other 40 percent will be from Aersomith contemporaries like Cheap Trick and Mott the Hoople. The Aerosmith songs will all be masters, except for three, including "Make It" and "Movin' Out," which the band rerecorded for the game.

Since "GH III" came out just last fall, it's logical to assume that the "Aerosmith" version is just a moderately tweaked version of "III." Habibipour said "Aersomith" is not simply a reskinned version of "III," noting that new costumes for "GH III" characters appearing in "Aerosmith" have been added, six new venues have been created for the game, and the menus and interfaces have been redone. Difficulty levels have also been tweaked. "We went back and retuned the game so it was back to where people felt it needed to be," Habibipour said. That doesn't mean the game has been dramatically altered — "medium is not the old easy" — but the developers listened to "GH III" players who felt like the game might have had too many brick walls for casual fans.

"Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" features six venues, the first based on Nipmuc Regional High School where the band played its first gig more than 30 years ago. The other venues are based on the band's albums, including a stage with a giant jack-in-the-box inspired by Toys in the Attic. New York club Max's Kansas City was also recreated as a venue.

Lead singer Steven Tyler did motion capture of his stage moves and facial expressions. The camera that filmed him was also motion-captured, so that the game can render moments like when Tyler grabs it. Guitarist Joe Perry selected the guitars for each set.

One of the additions from "III," boss battles against the likes of Slash and Tom Morello, won't be as apparent in "Aerosmith." The developer said there will be only one boss battle, though he wouldn't say who it's against (nor does he deny that it's hard to guess).

The new game has been in development since last year, before "III" was completed. It was helped along into existence by the fact that Joe Perry's son is a big "Guitar Hero" fan. According to Habibipour, Perry saw his son playing an earlier "Guitar Hero" and wanted to know why Aerosmith wasn't a part of it. When Activision was looking to include an Aerosmith song in "GH III" — and wasn't happy with a cover version that was available — Perry himself called up to volunteer his involvement.

Centering a game on the band made sense, Habibipour said, but he clarified that band-specific "Guitar Hero" games do not represent the sole future of the franchise. "It's its own path," he said. Band-specific "GH" games and full "GH" sequels can co-exist, he said, in parallel paths of development.

"Guitar Hero: Aersomith" ships in June, the same month that the series' DS debut, "Guitar Hero: On Tour" ships. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game were developed by Neversoft, which took the reins from series founder Harmonix on "Guitar Hero III." The Wii and PS2 versions were developed by Vicarious Visions and Budcat Creations, respectively.

Tom Hamilton Talks About Banned in Boston

Aero Force One
April 18, 2008

I thought I'd write and talk about some of the stuff that's going on these days. We're really excited about the Guitar Hero thing and have been hammering away at helping it all get ready. I thought making records was complicated!

I'm going to be in a play called Banned in Boston which I do every year around this time. It's a comedy about how ridiculous modern life can be especially when it comes to politics. Or pretty much anything having to do with reality. They get well known people from Boston to go up onstage and say things that would ruin their careers if they said it anywhere else. Luckily I can ham it up and there are no consequences (except for the suffering of the audience). The best thing about it is that it raises a lot of money for a group called Urban Improv. They go to schools in areas where there's a lot of danger on the streets and help the kids have strategies for dealing with dicey situations. It's been going for a long time and has been proven to make a difference.

I'm doing some press to let people know it's happening. This morning I did an on air interview with WZLX which is Boston's classic rock station. I think it went pretty well considering I only woke up ten minutes before I was supposed to call. It was 8:10. If way back when we started the band I knew I would have to get up that early I would have gotten a normal job.

Tomorrow I'm going to be doing one for Kiss 108 at 7:15. There's no telling what kind of stuff will fall out of my mouth into the microphone at that hour.

So anyway, just because we're off the road doesn't mean we're being unproductive.

We're all in album mode. Everybody has been saving up riffs we can make into Aerosmith songs when we hit the studio. I'm restraining myself about when it will come out. We have some solid song ideas happening and we're not putting it out until the inspiration drips right out of your speakers.

Until next time,

TH

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler exudes the coolness of a veteran rock star, but the former New Hampshire lad is a gadget geek at heart. In the new issue of Private Air magazine, the rocker shows off a watch that contains a 007-like emergency beacon that he says he smuggled into the US from France. "These are illegal in the States, but I had to have one," Tyler (left) gushes. (He also talks about the band, which just finished its biggest tour in years, promising that their next album - their last for Sony - will be "a nice, real record.") Tyler loves flying (he estimates he's leased hundreds of jets), founded Red Wing Motorcycles with a couple of family members, and once was in training to fly in the Russian space shuttle program. "The only reason I passed on it was because of my kids," Tyler tells the magazine. "But, I was ready. I was so ready."

Joe Perry Meeting With Head of Publishing For RedOctane

BrandWeek.com
April 10, 2008

"...It was December 2006 and the snow was coming down hard. Dusty Welch had flown from sunny California smack into a blizzard in Boston. At Logan International, he rented a car and braved the icy roads up into central Vermont. It was, perhaps, a foolish trek, but Welch was on a mission. He was on his way to meet Joe Perry — yes, that Joe Perry, the bad-boy guitarist for Aerosmith — to talk about a new, branded version of Activision's hit videogame, Guitar Hero III.

Things went well in the veteran rocker's living room and Welch, 38, learned that when a rock star begins talking to you about stuff other than rock music, it's a good sign. Still, what happened next caught him totally off guard. 'Come check out my gun collection,' Perry said, leading Welch through snow drifts out to his barn, where the 57-year-old guitarist beamed over his arsenal. Perry was particularly proud of his Civil War muskets, one of which he picked up, packed with powder and fired. Welch will never forget the feeling: 'Standing there in the massive cloud of smoke with Joe Perry, with the sulfur smell, in the middle of a snow storm . . . It was a surreal moment....' "

Steven Tyler and Neil Diamond join the fun

MassLive.com
April 9, 2008

It was a banner day for the Red Sox in numerous ways: the team received its 2007 championship rings, the team won a 5-0 shutout and Bill Buckner came home.

Lest it be overshadowed, though, it's important to note that favorite son Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Neil Diamond both chipped in with performances for the ages.

As Sox & Dawgs points out, it would have been nice to have the Standells perform, too, to complete the trifecta. But hey, you can't complain with this kind of performance:

If I haven't said it before, I'll say it now: You're essentially dead to me if you can't appreciate a lil Aerosmith in your life.

News From The Road

Back In The Saddle

I was a little surprised when Steven called last week and wanted to go to the Red Sox home opener. I was even more surprised that he accepted their offer to sing “God Bless America.” The Sox provided ST and his gang with awesome Monster seats. He watched the first half of the game from high above the friendly confines of the old bandbox. The weather was beautiful and sunny just barley kissing 60 degrees. It was a far cry from my last outdoor sporting event back in January when the then unbeaten Patriots smoked the San Diego Chargers to capture the AFC title. The temp that day was hovering around the freezing mark. Same outcome as the home team won again. The only problem with the Monster seats is the lack of out houses and when Mr. Tyler asked our Sox appointed security guard where the closet bathroom was we were taken to the commode under the center field bleachers. It was packed with fans that had been holding in their Bud Lights for a few innings. The Demon being the trooper that he is joined the throngs of Yankee haters who were left with their jaws dropped as he walked in. The thing that still blows my mind is how many people yell out “Hey that’s Mick Jagger! What? C’mon Boston. One guy even screamed “I can’t believe Bon Jovi is taking a piss in our bathroom. Now, I can honestly say I have heard it all. Either that guy was focally challenged or Steven had one of the best disguises ever. He didn’t seem to mind but forgive him for not shaking hands.

The eyebrows have it!

Steven then proceeded to Canvas Alley to sing “God Bless America” during the 7th inning stretch. As you all know Steven is no stranger to singing at sporting events but admitted he was nervous before stepping onto the sacred grounds of the Fenway outfield, yards away from where Dewey Evans patrolled the 9th position for nearly 20 seasons. Steven belted out the first half of the Irving Berlin classic before turning the mic over to the Fenway faithful who sang the second to last line of the tune so deafening that it sonically rivaled the F-16 Fighting Falcons that flew overhead earlier in the day. He dedicated the song to the Boston fans and the troops in Iraq. After that he watched the rest of the game with his pal and Crimson Hose co-owner John Henry. Steven wanted to talk baseball while Henry wanted to talk drums. The two met in 1995 in Florida when JH owned the Florida Marlins and Aerosmith were in Miami recording Nine Lives.

Steven warms up! Check out his glasses. Photo by: Mike Harnois

Steven at Fenway! Photo by John Bionelli

The day started out with all the pomp and circumstance that goes along with the Olde Towne team winning it’s 7th World Series title. The Red Sox are the winners of the second most titles in World Series history. The Yankees of course are first and while they are not in danger of giving up that the title of most wins any time soon they are certainly adjusting their rear view mirrors.

The Bruins, Patriots and Celtics were all represented along with the Sox on the field before the game and with a tip of the hat to Bill Buckner who threw out the first pitch. All I have to say is why did they have to have Bill Buckner throw out the first pitch? True the guy made one of the biggest errors in World Series play but his error didn’t lose the Sox the 1986 World Series. If anyone should have thrown out the first pitch it should have been then manager John McNamara for leaving the aging gimpy first basemen in there in the first place but I digress. I can just see old Johnny Mac and Grady Little sipping a Pina Colada together watching the festivities on NESN talking about their regrets.

Joey’s drum tech John “Magee” McGary was part of our entourage albeit 150 pounds lighter than when he first started with the band. Magee was the one who hijacked the World Series trophy for a photo op with ST and yours truly. Magee has his bags packed and will be keeping his chops up setting up the “Traps” for Eric Kretz next month as he embarks on a world tour with the newly reunited “Stone Temple Pilots.” Ironically Magee was with STP when they opened up for Aerosmith a few years back.

He had to give it back! Photo by: Mike Harnois

God Bless America has a nice ring to it. Magee's borrowed ring. Photo by: Mike Harnois

That’s all for now folks! A big thank you goes out to Sox brass Larry Cancro and Beth “Motley” Krudys for making it all happen.

See you in the studio!

Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler's Red Wing Motorcycles are now available in Japan.

For more information, check out the company's Japanese web site at this location.

Tyler launched Red Wing Motorcycle Company in collaboration with Mark Dirico and AC Custom Motorcycles. Red Wing Motorcycles are the fusion of rock and roll artistry and superior engineering. Imbued with Tyler's sense of style, each motorcycle is as comfortable to ride as it is sexy.

Tyler's artistic vision drove the outrageous design of the custom motorcycles, each hand crafted and hand signed by the legendary rock star.

"You get on one of these bikes and you can ride for days," Tyler said. “These bikes are sick, rugged, and just damn cool. And they’re amazing to look at.”

These motorcycles were made to ride. With a 35% increase in horsepower to the rear wheel compared to a stock Harley Davidson, and every inch handcrafted and tailor engineered, they are as hot to drive as they are to look at. The ProStreet model focuses on the beauty and finesse of Tyler's unique design while never losing sight of critical comfort and performance. The Retro model has the look and feel of a classic Harley Davidson with new components that ensure the best riding experience possible.

Red Wing Motorcycles are backed not only by Tyler's brilliance and style but by decades of engineering and motorcycle experience. Engineered by internationally renowned master engineer, Mark Dirico, each facet of the bike was purposefully crafted for a smooth, beautiful ride. Each bike is hand built by the team at AC Custom Motorcycles, with more than 300 years of combined experience building and perfecting motorcycles.

Red Wing Motorcycles debuted at the New Hampshire International Speedway’s Sylvania 300 and are now available to the public. Exclusive viewing of the bikes can be found at Manchester and Nashua, NH Harley Davidson dealerships. Each bike is backed by an extensive warranty and can be fully serviced by local Harley dealers.

More information about Red Wing Motorcycles can be found at this location.

Best Ever Guitar Riffs Poll - Aerosmith is Number Three

Blabbermouth.net, NY
April 2, 2008

ThisIsNottingham.co.uk reports that Deep Purple's rock anthem "Smoke On The Water" is the track with the greatest guitar riff of all time, according to a new survey.

The vintage hard rock song was crowned the greatest piece of strumming by Guitar-X students at London's Tech Music Schools.

The song beat Nirvana's grunge classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" into second place, while Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" came third.

John Wheatcroft, head of instruments at Guitar-X, said: "Whilst it could be argued that we are no longer living in the iconic 'Age Of The Electric Guitar', a quick look around any record shop proves that musical quality lasts, with artists such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin shifting just as many albums today than they did in their heyday."
