Sox Win!


I can’t believe how insensitive I can be. First the Red Sox coming from behind to destroy all competition and The Patriots making all the teams they are playing look like Pop Warner kids. Forgive me if I seem out of line. I sometimes forget that 80% of the people reading this don’t give a royal s%$t about Boston and their sports teams. I am a sports fan however and can appreciate a good team whether it’s the Yankees (who I still hate) or the Colts (Manning is awesome) or even the dreaded Canadian’s who almost always beat the Bruins. If you live in Pittsburgh, LA, Texas or even Manchester England you know that there are ups and downs and right now New England can’t get any higher. The Dropkick Murphys have been adopted as the unofficial band of the Red Sox and even played on a flat bed truck in the Red Sox parade around Boston yesterday. They will be starting their tour next week around the US and Canada so go out and check them out. Unfortunately the SOX won the series in 4 games because Steven was set to sing the anthem tonight for game 6.

Steven will be heading to London at the end of the week to take part in the great magazine “Classic Rocks” annual award dinner. Aerosmith are up for show of the year. Let’s hope ST brings home some hardware for that unbelievable Hyde Park monsoon extravaganza. No doubt Ross Halfin will be at the Demon’s table buttering his rolls and refilling ST’s water glass. He’s no fool!

Joe took time out of his vacation to help Guitar Hero celebrate the release of their new game. Joe spent last Sunday in the big apple signing autographs at Game Stop’s 33rd and Broadway store. That was a blast! What a cool store and the staff were very accommodating. After that Joe played at the Guitar Hero private event down in the Lower East Side at a club called the Anexx. The place held 250 tops. Joe played with his sons Tony and Adrian’s band Tab the band. This was far from the Partridge family folks! The band cranked up some old Aero tunes and dug deep into Joe’s back catalog of solo stuff. They even did a few covers as well as a TAB song. The show was shot by Aerosmith’s video director Casey Thibeault and will be available to be seen on the web real soon.

Joe seemed to be having a great time and even mentioned that he would someday like to take this outfit on the road to play for all the fans across the country. First Aerosmith has to get back in the studio and get crackin’ on some new material which they will be working on all winter.

Joey has been busy with his clothing store “Technical” which is on Newbury Street in Boston and will be the honorary chairman of the 2007 Boston Music Awards that takes place on December 1st in Toledo. Just kidding!

While Halifax struggles to stage another big-name outdoor concert, Aerosmith rocked more than the city of Charlottetown during the band's July concert in the P.E.I. capital - it rocked provincial coffers.

Tourism Minister Valerie Docherty says the Aerosmith concert, the largest in P.E.I. history, pumped more than $12 million into the provincial economy - much more than originally estimated.

Docherty was asked about the economic impact of the concert during a review of her budget at Province House this week.

The tourism minister said more than 31,000 tickets were sold, and more than 25,000 of those were sold off-Island.

The average concertgoer stayed on the Island an average of 1.76 days and spent about $500.

Jim Bagnall, Conservative tourism critic, questioned the tourism minister on the success of the concert and whether she'd consider supporting a similar concert next year.

Concert promoter David Carver is already working on a mega-concert for next summer. Some say it may be the Eagles.

Docherty said she considered the concert a success, but not the location.

The concert was held at the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre. It is in the heart of the city, with limited parking and poor highway infrastructure, and the concert venue is not bowl-shaped, which made it difficult to see the stage.

"In the future, we cannot use that same venue for a similar or a larger event," Docherty said.

The province, in conjunction with the city and concert promoters, is looking at alternative locations.

The provincial government put $350,000 into promoting the Aerosmith concert. By her estimate, Docherty said the province recovered more than $1.4 million in taxes.

Health Minister Doug Currie said he heard many complaints on the campaign trail about the location of the concert.

"The facility is basically on the front steps of a very senior residential area. There wasn't a resident complaining about the concert - they were looking at supporting the concert," he said.

Curt Schilling Day!


Hey Everybody!

Well the SOX are on a roll. They got the first pickle out of the jar last night and kicked the Rockies collective asses. We are hoping old friend Big # 38 can make it 5 wins in a row for the Bo Sox. The Rockies came in winning something like 21 of their last 22. They got their hats handed to them last night but don't count them out yet. I was digging through my computer the other day and found some Red Sox/ Curt Schilling related things that I wanted to share with all of you.

Curt and his wife Shonda came out to a show in Phoenix on the Rockin' the Joint tour. They hung around backstage and had a blast. The next time we ran into Schill and Shonda I invited him to the Mansfield show on a Red Sox day off. He brought some friends and some shirts and baseballs for the guys. Last November Curt turned 40 and the band were invited to his Birthday bash in Beantown. Unfortunately the guys couldn't make it but Steven and Joe wanted to send them a video greeting. Here it is recorded in San Antonio last year.

This is Joey's drum tech Magee with Schill. Magee has lost about 75lbs since this picture was taken and has lowered his weight - just under 200lbs. Way to go Magee!

Nominations for the 20th annual Boston Music Awards were announced yesterday, and it was a good year for Massachusetts metal bands. Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and the Berklee-linked prog veterans Dream Theater all scored multiple nominations, with Killswitch leading with seven.

All three acts will vie for the top prize -act of the year - against emo sensations Boys Like Girls (five nominations) and singer-songwriter Lori McKenna (four), who got a national profile boost this year following a tour with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Reunited alt-rock trio Dinosaur Jr. is also in the running.

Others receiving more than one nomination include singer-songwriters Matt Nathanson and Josh Ritter with four apiece and power popsters the Click Five and rockers Buffalo Tom and the Slip with three each.

Awards will be handed out in 27 categories on Dec. 1 at the Orpheum Theatre (tickets are $35-$100 and are on sale at ticketmaster.com and 617-931-2000).

Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer will serve as the honorary chairman of the Boston Music Awards.

Proceeds from tickets and an accompanying online auction will benefit Music Drives Us and the Berklee City Music Program.

Nat Geo took you through the aging process during Inside the Living Body, now it takes you on a ride through the human body to figure out what exactly all of our moving parts are doing. A showcase of the amazing "machines" that make up our bodies. Producer Chad Cohen took some time to detail what it was like to actually film inside the body.

Nat Geo: What makes this show different than other shows about the human body?

Chad Cohen: This program shows how the entire body works together as one very well-oiled machine. But we also highlight how the body sometimes doesn’t work, with stories of everyday people undergoing extraordinary new medical procedures. We feature the first study injecting stem cells into patients suffering from heart failure; the first test measuring a performer's vocal activity during a live performance; and the first retinal implant trial. We also show off a lot of new medical imagery. You’d be amazed at the places you can stick a camera these days.

Nat Geo: How were you able to get access to film Steven Tyler of Aerosmith from the inside out?

Chad Cohen: Steven had recently come to Dr. Steven Zeitels of Massachusetts General Hospital with a vocal bleed that had caused the band to cancel part of its tour. Dr. Zeitels pioneered a noninvasive method of laser surgery that zaps the blood vessels, sealing them off and stopping the bleeding. Steven was very impressed with the surgery and happy that his voice was working again. Both he and Dr. Zeitels were interested in getting the story of the technology out there, and I think they trusted National Geographic Channel to tell it in the way it should be told.

Nat Geo: What was it like filming the live sequence with Steven during the concert?

Chad Cohen: It was crazy backstage, not the sort of place a National Geographic producer usually finds himself. Steven was a pleasure to work with and was really interested in learning how his voice actually worked. The doctors hooked him up with devices to measure the speed of his vocal cords and to monitor his heart rate and respiration rate during the live performance. It was hilarious when he went out on stage and said, “Thank you to Massachusetts General Hospital and National Geographic for getting me ‘more wired’ than I have ever been before.” During the concert, we recorded how many times his vocal cords flapped together — it was more than 500,000 times, and his vocal cords traveled more than six miles over the course of the show. No one has ever recorded real-time data like that during a rock concert.....

Steven Tyler will appear on US television this weekend






Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is set to appear on NBC's 'Today Show' tomorrow (October 19) and National Geographic Channel's 'Incredible Human Machine' on Sunday (October 21), where they will chronicle the cutting-edge laser-surgery he underwent to repair his vocal chords.

Footage of the legendary rocker's surgery will be shown, as well as a backstage test that evaluated the stress that singing put on his vocal chords.

During a sold-out show at the Tweeter Center in Aerosmith's hometown of Boston, Tyler was fitted with a vest to monitor his vital readings including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels/lung capacity and body temperature to show the impact a performance had on his body.

The National Geographic programme will show this test as well as high-definition photos of Tyler's larynx during the operation, and before-and-after photos illustrating how his vocal chords were repaired.

Saturday:   After the range was dinner and prizes....

The high point of the dinner was the speech by Chuck from Project ValourIT. ValourIT purchases voice activated laptops for injured troops so that they can, well, do what we all do every day: chat, blog, check email, balance their checkbook, and surf the web. Chuck was injured by an IED and lost the use of his hands. He knew of some voice activated software and a lady with Soldiers Angels got him a laptop and the software. They decided that this was something that more injured troops needed and ValourIT was born. Chuck told us that these guys just having the ability to once again do what they used to do every day is often a real help to getting them through their injuries. Definitely a worthy cause and one worth sending a few bucks to. The GBR raises some money for these folks.

The Social Security Administration organized a photo op today to showcase the first Baby Boomer to apply for retirement benefits, Kathleen Casey-Kirschling, 61, who was born, according to the agency, one second after midnight on Jan. 1, 1946......

The agency probably thought it was doing some good with the event. But SSA no doubt caused probably considerable psychic pain for many a Baby Boomer who, after all, are part of a an increasingly creaky generation that is decidedly not okay with the idea of growing old, that refuses to act its age. As Exhibit A, I offer Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, born March 26, 1948.

Were there any moments of the season that just ended that you particularly enjoyed, particularly anything that was unexpected, that you didn't plan for?

We had a lot of really good bands on this year, and the interviews went exceedingly well. It was really great to interview Gore Vidal, who I think is a great American man of letters, and he might not be around for that many more years—I mean, he's in his 80s—so it was great to have met the man. The Larry Flynt interview was really interesting. We didn't talk about Hustler; I don't care about Hustler magazine, really. Jerry Falwell had just passed away, and they had a very interesting relationship. He's very articulate.

We just interviewed Steven Tyler the other day, of Aerosmith. Very sincere, very intense guy. He lives right at the surface of himself, so you ask him a question and he's just right there with it.

I talked to him the day before on the phone, he had said, "I want Henry to call me. I don't want to hear from managers, I just want the two of us to talk." So I got his number and I called him on this Sunday afternoon, and we ended up having this really cool conversation about everything from music to being in a band and the frustrations contained therein. I mean, the guy's been in the same band since the 70s, and in that time, there's probably a bunch of ups and downs. So that was a really cool interview, very intense..........

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society Announces Above & Beyond Citizen Honors at a Press Conference on Tuesday, October 9 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter hosted its annual MS Connecticut Citizen of the Year Gala on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville , Conn. The event, which raised more than $244,000, featured Aerosmith in concert, a pre-concert reception and an after concert dessert reception. Funds raised ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS.......

It was their last stop on their “Tour Heard ‘Round the World” and Aerosmith came to have a party and the fans- spanning the full spectrum of races, ages, and drunkenness were ready to get down.

Special guest Joan Jett and the Blackhearts hit the stage first, warming the crowd up with all their favorites, including “Bad Reputation” and “I Love Rock N’Roll.” Proving her rock pedigree, even at 49, Jett can shred just like back in her Runaways days. Throwing in a couple tracks from her latest album, Sinner, Jett even brought out her cover of Sweet’s “A.C.D.C.”

The crowd, worked up from Jett, was growing impatient waiting for Aerosmith to take the stage. Every gap in the house music elicited hoots and hollers, and finally, when the lights went out, the screams were deafening.

Opening with a slickly produced newsreel-esque video chronicling the bands worldly travels, the anxiety was palpable. Finally, the bad boys from Boston hit the stage and the crowd hit their feet. Opening with “Love in an Elevator” Steven Tyler worked the runway leading into the crowd with the swagger we all know and love, skin-tight pants and all.

The crowd sang along and danced a bit, but rarely kicked up the volume, opting for a more reserved appreciation.

For a group of five quinquagenarians, the Toxic Twins and company still rock like its’72. Okay, maybe more like ’92. Powering into “Cryin’” complete with video screen playing the video starring Alicia Silverstone that thrust them back to the top of the charts with 1993’s Get a Grip, Tyler proved he’s powerful, his strut sexy as ever, even as strange as describing a 59 year old man sexy is, especially a 59 year old man who pulled a harmonica out of his pants.

Joe Perry, on lead guitar, is nothing short of amazing live and could show the guitarists of today, with their excessive pedal tricks and Guitar Hero training, how a real axe man does it.

Bringing out an insane 14 string guitar and a couple of chairs, Perry and Tyler got their blues on, at the expense of the crowd’s energy. It’s a little bit self indulgent to bust out blues covers in the middle of an arena show, and the crowd collectively took a seat, with a patient boredom. Maybe by reaching rock legend status, you get a pass to do whatever you’d like for your live show, and there’ll still be butts in the seat.

Finally, the fans were back on their feet for “Dream On,” a song which, Eminem’s butchering aside, will live forever as one of the classics that will never die. Tyler’s voice was spot on, and I will admit I got a little teary eyed.

Even with an awesome stage set up, replete with two ramps and of course a center runway, most of the band stayed in the same spot, clumped around Joey Kramer’s drum kit.

Besides those few fuddy-duddy faux-pas, Aerosmith are still at the top of their game. Rounding things out with their classic, and fan favorite “Walk This Way,” they went out with a bang, again cementing themselves as one of rock’s legends and fan favorites even though they lost steam mid-set.

Activision has revealed many more new tracks that will be featured in this month's Guitar Hero III for PS2, PS3, 360, and Wii.

Highlights include the original master recordings of "When You Were Young" by The Killers and "Same Old Song and Dance" by Aerosmith. Cover versions include "Devil Went Down To Georgia" by Charlie Daniels Band and Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love."

"The men's department at Bloomingdale's in San Francisco was turned into an intimate concert venue Oct. 2 as Perry Farrell's Satellite Party teamed up with my favorite menswear designer John Varvatos for a VH1 Save The Music benefit..........

But before Perry and Satellite Party took the stage, there were some things for auction to raise money for VH1 Save the Music. And there were some pretty snazzy things that kept up with the whole rock n' roll theme of the evening.......

There were also some original black and white photos and electric guitars signed by various rockers like Joe Perry, Ryan Adams, members of Velvet Revolver and Chris Cornell....... "

Good Night Irene!


Well another tour is in the books. The equipment is on a slow boat back from the last show in Honolulu to Beantown. The show was a private gig for Toyota but more on that later.

After the Mansfield show the guys played in Bristow Virginia. This is another place were the band has played quite a lot the last 10 years. The guys couldn’t make it to the Walter Reed Hospital this time around so they arranged for 50 wounded soldiers to come to the show. They met with the guys and girls and posed for pictures before the show.

The Toronto show brought out Liv Tyler and son Milo. They sat on the stage left side of the stage and were serenaded all night by ole Grandpa. Liv handed me a list of songs before the show and asked if there is any way the guys would play them. Of the 7 songs, 6 were in the set including Rats but unfortunately for her Janie didn’t make the cut this night.

Mohegan Sun brought out Aero Turbo fan Billy MacDonald. I think we have counted that Billy has been to about 200 Aerosmith concerts in his life. It’s always a pleasure to see his smiling face and him just being in the venue puts everybody in a better mood.

Atlantic City - what a place! If you have never been to Atlantic City imagine a much smaller version of Las Vegas but with none of the class. The Borgata though is a great place to play and has a great staff of people working there. The venue itself resembled a hotel ballroom, well because it is a Hotel Ballroom. 2800 person capacity makes it one of the smallest places Aerosmith plays. The intimate setting always makes for one of the best shows of any tour. Steven dedicated “Dream On” to Aero Force One member Monica Massaro who was tragically killed in July. Monica would have been to several of these east coast shows and her presence was sorely missed. The band were all quite aware on what happened to her and deeply saddened when they heard the news of Monica’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Massaro family. May she rest in peace.

AC was suppose to be the last stop on the tour but with Chicago being postponed the week before it was rescheduled. Thank God it was because the show rocked. The place was packed and the joint was jumping. I want to dedicate the show to our old pal Chris from Florida. How’s that hat taste now buddy!

Well unfortunately because of travel restrictions the Maui show couldn’t happen but don’t think that it will be off forever. The next time the boys play in Japan I’m sure Maui and Honolulu will be definitely considered in the routing.

Speaking of Japan it looks like the band’s Tour Manager Jimmy Eyers won’t be heading there after all. He is looking to put his sushi training to good use a little closer to home. He is interested in opening Simi Valley Sushi during his off time with Aerosmith. He is heart broken that his Japanese plans have fallen through but looks forward to combining his posh English up-bringing with his formal martial arts and Sushi training to the Simi Valley area for what should be a kick-ass sushi restaurant. His specialty he told me will be steak on a hot rock.

Well it’s no secret the band ended this set of shows in Honolulu playing a private gig for Toyota. What was so cool about it is that Stevie Nicks was also on the bill. Stevie is the female version of Steven Tyler complete with scarves on her mic stand. She is also so cool that you could add some Joe Perry in there for good measure. She was joined onstage by her Fleetwood Mac band mate, Mick Fleetwood. For anyone who has followed Aerosmith know that the band was loosely modeled in the early days after the Peter Green version of Fleetwood Mac. This prompted the guys to put Rattlesnake Shake in the set in honor of the gentle giant. Stop Messin’ was also dedicated to him because it is their version that Joe plays every night.

Employee of Week:

Goes to Brad “Burt” Johnson. Brad is Steven’s monitor man but has also done the front of house mix for the band. It was then that he got the nickname “Burt.” One night early on in his tenure Joe was thanking several crew members for their hard work and dedication when Joe mistakenly thanked Brad as Burt over the PA. No one had the balls to correct Joe so Brad is now Burt. He is our Joe D’Maggio because he has been able to keep his job as Steven’s monitor man for longer than anyone else in recent memory. When I asked him how he could keep Steven so happy when others failed he said, “it’s simple - I just listen to the records.” Way to go Burt!

Aerosmith headlined a private concert Saturday at the Les Murakami stadium as part of a national Toyota Motor Co. convention. Toyota rented the entire lower campus from the University of Hawai‘i and closed all access points for the day as part of a $500,000 agreement.

Cooke Field at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa was filled with about 6,000 people on Saturday eating shrimp and chicken kabobs, drinking beer or wine and taking shelter from some brief Mānoa showers under the stylish tents. Because most of the lower campus was rented out for the Toyota convention, students were restricted from all points of access over the weekend.

Toyota rented out the athletic complex to celebrate its 50th year of business in the U.S. The private party was broken into three parts: a business meeting in the Stan Sheriff Center, a reception on Cooke Field and a private Aerosmith concert in Les Murakami Stadium.

"One of the reasons we're back in Hawai‘i is because our first dealer meeting was here in 1957," said Mike Michels, corporate manager of external communications for Toyota. "So there's a kind of nostalgia there."

The celebration cost the company $500,000 for use of the university grounds, and much more for food, personnel and entertainment. Gregg Takayama, the UH director of communications, has said the money will be used to benefit the university as a whole, but stated that the athletic department has not directly specified what the money will go toward.

Toyota employees from as far away as New York flew in to be a part of the program. They wandered around the field, talking story and admiring some of the "tricked-out" Toyota Scions bought and modified by locals.
