Dubai:  The time has come. After nearly four decades, rock super-band Aerosmith will perform their first concert in the Middle East at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Club tonight.

Excitement has been mounting all week and, after various "sightings" by members of the public, the five-strong group officially made an entrance at a press conference yesterday.

Around 100 journalists turned out for a 10-minute Q&A session at the Shangri-la Hotel with lead singer Steven Tyler, lead guitarist Joe Perry, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer.

In good form, the band made jokes and talked freely about their long-lasting career.

'Beautiful, insane'

Tyler, famed for his raspy singing voice and cavernous mouth, described Dubai as the "Vegas of the East".

"It is beautiful, insane," he said."Yesterday I was out riding camels. Last night I was eating camels... and smoking a few," he continued in a lighter vein.

Hamilton was "amazed" to be in Dubai. "We've been together for a while and never dreamed we would be playing in the Middle East. There are countries all over the world that we thought were going to be off limits to rock music, so this is something we are experiencing for the first time."

When describing their career so far, Perry admitted they never thought they would still be playing together 37 years after the band was formed. "We kind of went from day to day and hoped we could pay the rent and feed ourselves without having to get a real job," he said. "We hope we can continue to do just that: play day to day, play to new places like this and play to new fans."

The next leg of Aerosmith's world tour will take them for the first time to Bangalore, India, on Saturday.

Perry said they were fascinated by Indian culture - one of the reasons why they called their company Vindaloo Music - and, following a suggestion from the media, they would consider playing Taste of India while they are there.

Riding on creative euphoria

A select few newspersons were privileged enough to have a one-on-one with Aerosmith but, even then, it was strictly a 10-minute-only affair.

When asked if he had any regrets about his addiction to drugs and alcohol, now behind him, frontman Steven Tyler said: "No, I don't have any regrets. It's interesting, the buzz you get from music: when you play, it is one thing... when you create your own and write, it is another thing and the buzz you get from walking on stage in front of people is a whole other thing.

"You're riding on the euphoria of creativity and some of us have found that that's either all we can do, because the other one damn near killed us, or that that's just going to have to be good enough for now." Speaking of his successful treatment for Hepatitis C last year, he said: "When you are going through that, you do whatever you can to get to the other side and I did," he said.

'Still sing good'

"Now it's non-detectable in my blood stream." Ever the joker, he added: "Nor is there a brain in my cavity but I still sing good."

Last year also saw bass player Tom Hamilton fighting throat cancer. Thankfully, he has now been given the "all clear".

Describing it as "a nightmare", he said it seemed "unreal" looking back.

"I had a very hopeful frame of mind and a lot of confidence in my doctors, and they were really confident they were going to get rid of it. Now I look back on it and think, wow, did that really happen?"

Ending on a lighter note, lead guitarist Joe Perry, who arrived late in Dubai in order to appear on the American Idol final, said he enjoyed playing the Kinks' You Really Got Me with the aspiring singer Sanjaya on the show.

"I knew we were probably going to play India and it would be a good thing to kind of jack him up," said Perry. "He just overwhelmed me with a great personality and I think he's got a future if he works at it. He's got the drive and there's just something about him."

And that's a glimpse into the psyche of a band at full pelt, despite their years. Their world tour next takes them to India, Europe, Russia, Canada and the US - all in the next eight weeks.

News From The Road

Aero Force One
May 30, 2007

Greetings from Dubai

Greetings from Flight 202....

Hey everybody! As I type this I am on Emirates Flight 202 to Dubai. Seems like ages since the last show. A lot has gone on since then.

Steven went down to the Bahama’s with a bunch of friends and played a show at the Atlantis resort. In his band were Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson from Paul McCartney’s band along with our own Rusty, Russ Irwin. Playing drums was Marti (Jack of all trades) Frederiksen.

Tom went to the Kiss 108 concert in Boston last week. He was taking in some new music with the Fam. Tom is looking great and you can tell he is pumped to be getting back on the road.

Joey went to the Velvet Revolver show at a great club in Boston called Avalon. This club has had so many name changes over the years. It’s been called Citi and Metro to name a few. I think it was called Boston Boston in the late 70’s. My brother saw Aerosmith there in 1980. Back to VR. The guys were cooking on this night. Joey dug the show from the balcony. He hung out with Matt Sorum before the show. The next day he took Matt and Slash to his Corvette dealership. The guys stayed all day and finished up at The East Bay Grill in Plymouth for an early dinner. Slash and Matt flipped when they saw the Mayflower...They talked with JK about the old days, all the bands and records they loved, and of course cars. They raved about the food at the east bay. Slash wants Corvette Mike to find him a Vette when the tour is over. Joey said he had a blast hanging with those guys...

Duff went to the Sox game with my buddy Rick Barton from the Dropkick Murphys. Rick has started his own band called Everybody Out! Check them out on myspace. Duff is a huge Seattle Mariners fan and loves to check out Fenway whenever he is in town.

Dave Kushner and I went to see the Heaven and Hell show in Lowell. It was good to catch up with Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi before the show. What a great show! If you get a chance check it out this summer.

Looking at the first part of this road report, I’ve dropped so many names you may have had it confused with Ross Halfin’s diary. Sorry about that!

Speaking of Ross he will be in Dubai. I haven’t seen him in like 6 days. He has been going on and on about his new favorite old band called Kingdom Come. He has them in his iPod and he runs to them he says.

On to American Idol! Holy shit did you guys give Joe some crap for being on that show. You would have hated the lovefest that went on backstage. I’m sure you want to know what kind of jerk Sanjaya was. I hate to tell you but he was the nicest kid you would want to meet. What he lacked in the vocal department he made up for in personality. He was in awe of Joe. He gave Joe nothing but respect. All the armchair critics can say what they want but the kid is all right in my book. I’m sure you think I’ve totally lost it. On to Kelly Clarkson. The girl can sing! I get to hear the world’s greatest singer every night but this girl has some pipes. Again, say what you want but she is definitely America’s sweetheart and is going to be around a long time. Joe’s dressing room was smack dab in the middle of Tony Bennett and Bette Midler. C’mon it doesn’t get any better than that. Joe was having a blast hanging out with the Music Industry’s elite. Smokey Robinson even stopped by for a chat. For all the grief he got, it was a lot of fun.

Just read the NY Post. What a load of crap! Must be a slow news day.

I need to give a big shout out to Mikey and Danielle in the the Apple store in Hingham Mass. I have been driving them crazy trying to get my new computer in order and they have been putting up with my inability to troubleshoot. Mike has been a frequent visitor to Steven’s house so I’m in good company.

No more side projects. For the next 6 weeks it’s nothing but Aerosmith. Looks like the guys will be doing tons of press out here. I’m sure they won’t be strangers to youtube. Keep it here.

Next Stop! Dubai and India.

See you on the Road!

John B.

"Spent the day with Steven Tyler, which is fun but he never stops. Started off with him looking for me at 9am (I was picking up my computer). Gym, pool, then the desert. We drove out on the way to Oman. I thought I'd get 30 minutes out of him, he did photos for two hours with full concentration no messing about. It was so hot I took my sneaker off and the sand burnt my foot. We stayed out there until dark.

We get back to Dubai as Joe Perry and clan arrive, with Rock'n'roll John B already stressing. 'I've got to sort out the set list, the show is in two days time!' Joe says to me 'We're in your neck of the woods.' Where does he think I'm from? I'm of the chosen race, then again so is Danielstein and he's from Iran, just across the water. Joe introduces me to his mother. 'I have to keep your son in order when he's being bad,'I tell her. 'My son is never bad. I brought him up properly.' I can't argue with that...

Steven then wanted to eat, local food. We all (Kazuyo, Kripa, Gordon, Erin, ST and me) ate overlooking the water, outdoors. It was like having dinner in a sauna. Erin took a photo of Steven and me with me refusing to smile. 'Come on, I want a smile your mothers would like.' She got it in the end, I'll put it in the diary when she sends it. Kripa ate local chicken. 'Not bad, but it's not the same as a KFC large bucket.' Tonight here is like Friday night - we go clubbing."

May 28

"Woke up late for me - 11am. Felt I'd lost the day. My Macbook is broken. I find an Apple service centre run by Asians. 'No problem, you can have it tomorrow for $600'. 'It has a three year warranty.' 'Yes sir, but warranty takes two weeks... 'What bollocks! I end up paying.

I cook, that is the right word, by the pool. It is nice if you like hot. Go off and try to shoot some travel type photos. Dubai resembles a building site since I was last here, traffic and high rises everywhere. I shoot the new tallest building in the world and the Emirates Towers with the moon in the middle. Shooting Steven Tyler out in the desert tomorrow - Aerosmith are all arriving in stages...."

Aerosmith - ‘We’ve always wanted to play in India’

Delhi Newsline, India
May 29, 2007

Aerosmith, sometimes called the greatest American rock and roll band, is finally coming to India. Before their performance in Bangalore on June 2, the famous five of the Grammy-winning band talk about their reunion and the India tour in an e-mail interview with our correspondent.

How did the India tour come about?
This country has always fascinated us. We’ve always wanted to play in India and it has finally happened.

What expectations do you have of the Indian audience?
Well, this is the first time we are playing in India, so we don’t really know what to expect at all! We’re hoping that everyone at the show will have an awesome time.

How have things been with the band after the reunion in 1984?
Great and awesome! It is the same feeling we had when we first started.

To what do you guys attribute 37 years of sustained popularity, acclaim and success?
To our fans. Without them, we wouldn’t be nominated for, let alone win, the Grammies. Don’t get me wrong, winning a Grammy is amazing and hearing your name being read out is a great feeling but nothing beats the feeling of walking out and performing in front of thousands of people who are there to see you.

Which bands/artists do you like?
We are into bands like Kings of Leon that have a bluesy feel to them.

Steven Tyler is probably the only singer who ties scarves around the microphone. Why does he do that?
Tyler: I had a favourite macramé shirt and an Indian scarf that I wore onstage all the time. The shirt and the scarf were finally in tatters, but instead of throwing them away, I hung them on the micro stand for good luck. Must be the gypsy in me.

How did April 13 come to be known as the Aerosmith Day?
We don’t quite know how it came about but Massachusetts is our home — geographically and spiritually. It is an honour that the state has dedicated a day for us.

How has the band changed over the years since its inception in 1970?
We have grown in our music, but otherwise we are the same bunch of crazy people who have come together to create music.

Joe Perry Interview

Times of India, India
May 29, 2007

He doesn't regret playing at the American Idol finale with the controversial Sanjaya, Aerosmith's legendary guitarist Joe Perry tells BT.

At the much-hyped American Idol finale last week, the biggest waves were created by Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who teamed up with the controversial Idol Sanjaya Malakar as he belted out You Really Got Me. Was a reality singing show the place for the legendary rocker, especially as bandmate Steven Tyler has already gone on record saying he doesn't quite approve of these contests? Guitar wiz Joe Perry discusses the issue in an exclusive midnight chat with BT.

On India and his great love for Indian food: India brings out so many different feelings in me. I've been fascinated with India and Indian culture as long as I can remember - ever since the 60s with the Beatles and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I love Indian food - it's my favourite cuisine. I love the mixture of spices and the subtle flavours. It's really erotic, the spices are so sensuous. My wife feels the same way.

Bangalore: I've heard a lot about it. The food, I hear, is one step hotter than vindaloo!

On playing at the AI finale: They (producers) asked me to play backup with Sanjaya and I agreed. Fans love the show. It's big, the second biggest in the US after the Superbowl in terms of the number of viewers.

I did it for fun - it was a tongue-in-cheek kind of thing. I also wanted to play with Kelly Clarkson (he accompanied her for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band). She's got a fantastic voice.

On controversial Sanjaya: Sanjaya's so young. I don't think he's had time to develop as a singer. Sometimes that happens naturally - Michael Jackson was a natural at five - at other times it takes years. Sanjaya has a lot going for him - he's got rhythm and timing. It's a matter of putting in the hours. Even the Beatles spent years playing at clubs. You have to rehearse and rehearse, play and play. In his case it may be too much too soon. Now even the show's runners-up get record deals! You have to see whether or not he's got it in him to keep it going. Sanjaya's a really nice guy. He could have been all blown up with the fame he's got, but he knows his limitations. He listens - he went along with all the suggestions I gave him. I found the experience interesting. For me, it was a piece of cake.

But for him - it takes a lot of guts to go in front of the judges and get all those hits in the press.

On Bangalore and its rock city status: Considering the bands that have already visited, I'm sure the city will be familiar with the protocol of rock shows. We'll give them a taste of what a hardcore blues rock band is. We're nothing like the English or German bands. We play an exciting brand of hard rock and ballads.

From what you tell me, the response to us won't be different from any other city that's familiar with rock music. That's what I love about music. It's immediate. There's a connection whether you are playing at Hyde Park or Chicago and it's been happening since the beginning of time and the troubadours.

Steven Tyler Rep Rejects Rumors Singer Will Leave Aerosmith

Blabbermouth.net, NY
May 28, 2007

New York Post's "Page Six" column reports in its May 28 edition that Liv Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, has been telling people "her dad is going to announce he's leaving Aerosmith soon because he can't take how the rest of the band is treating him. She said they don't appreciate him." A rep for Liv — who is off to Toronto this summer to star in "The Hulk" with Ed Norton — said he couldn't reach the actress. A rep for Tyler said, "Liv never said anything about her father leaving Aerosmith."

Tom Hamilton Interview

Hindustin Times, India
May 26, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The voice on the other side said, "Hi, this is Tom from Aerosmith. How are you doing?"

That might sound very guy-from-the-next-block types. But that's how Tom Hamilton, famed bassist of Aerosmith is known to be - hopelessly grounded and hopelessly famous. Aerosmith will perform for the first time in India, on June 2, in Bangalore.

In this interview, Tom did not do the Taj Mahal, tikka masala and ‘I love India' routine. So what did he say?

India Calling: I was talking to a friend and he asked what we were up to. I told him that we're going to India. And it felt amazing saying that. Every once in a while we meet people and they tell us, you guys should play in India, there is a lot of Aerosmith fanfare there. Recently, I was watching one of the American talk shows where the Indian prime minister was a guest. It was interesting to hear him talk about the changes in India.

Looking forward to... I've heard that Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India and I have a picture in my head. I'm expecting a sort of juxtaposition of the modern and the ancient.

Ever heard of Bollywood? Who has not? I know about it but haven't really picked up any CDs yet. It's good to hear that there is a band scene happening there too.

Is rock dead? They've said that many times. There was the Punk era, Disco era and the whole Techno era and the regular rock bands were called dinosaurs. I read in the Rolling Stone or the Sun magazine that guitar was dead, and that music would only be made with synthesisers and computers. That was stupid of them to say that. But it's interesting to know that a lot of youngsters have started listening to hard rock again. It's an amazing thing, it's like a new trend. But for us it's where we've always been.

Aerosmith - playing on: It took us a long time to reach here and understand each other. We rarely discuss anything without yelling or shouting and sometimes the exchanges leave you upset. But we have learned not to be affected.

Looking back... "In late 60s, when Joe Perry (guitarist) and I were kids there was an explosion of bands. There was Led Zeppelin, Who, Doors, Byrds, Rolling Stones... I'd try to play like our heroes. But we just blasted the volume and tried to play fast and rock hard. Steven Tyler (vocalist) had his own band. But he as fed up of what he was doing. He thought we were horrible musicians, but he recognised the energy. That's how Aerosmith happened."

A little known fact: I enjoy slap-stick. I have played Laura Bush and Camilla Parker Bowles. Now I want to play a guy. I was meant to go to acting school, but Aerosmith happened instead. Sound advice: Today you can make records and correct your mistakes on the comp. But the focus should be on playing your instruments well.

Walk this way

May will end with a big bang as rockers Aerosmith arrive in Dubai.

Aerosmith has been around for over 35 years and is considered one of the biggest rock bands in the world. The bad boys from Boston have released as many as 14 albums and are a force to reckon with in the music world. Let us take a peek into their eventful journey.

Agreed, their debut album may not have been a breakthrough one, but it featured famous tracks including "Dream On" and "Mama Kin". As time went on, the boys began releasing noteworthy materials, thus strengthening their hold on the music world.

It wasn't until 1975 when Aerosmith released the album Toys in the Attic that the Americans realised they had a triumphant rock 'n' roll band. The album contained two songs which brought the group stupendous stardom – "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk this Way" reached the US Top 10 in a short time.

Their tryst with success did not end here. The boys continued to release studio albums, garnering diehard fans on the way. It was evident from the sellout shows that the band was not losing its rocky edge. They did not sit easy here. The boys wanted to go international and it was in 1989 when they released Pump that the band finally got international acclaim. The album featured three top 10 singles – "Janie's Got A Gun", "Love In An Elevator" and "What it Takes". The album sold 7 million copies and gave the band its first Grammy.

After the Pump tour and a break in between, the band came back with its most successful album to date: Get a Grip.

This record made its grand entry by becoming the No. 1 in the Billboard charts.

This album also gave them some of their biggest tracks to date including "Livin on the Edge", "Crazy", "Cryin" and "Amazing". You now you have the chance to see the legends right here in Dubai.

Aerosmith smitten by India

Blabbermouth.net, NY
May 24, 2007

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and drummer Joey Kramer recently spoke to Daily News & Analysis about the band's upcoming June 2 appearance at the Palace Grounds in Bangalore.

"This is the first time we are playing in India!" Tyler said. "We hope that this will be a good show. We are sure everyone will have an awesome time at the concert. And of course being asked to play in India will surely be an event we won't forget."

"Indian music is just wonderful," Kramer said. "It speaks the language of the soul and is just brilliant. We are aware of some of the genres of Indian music and artists like Pandit Ravi Shankar. We know there is a world-famous music and movie scene in India and we are sure that its growing influence will continue."

Tyler also spoke about the high level of lunacy that one can witness during their shows and have absolutely no formula for sticking together for so many years as a band. "All our concerts are crazy! We are crazy," he said. "Talking about staying together, there are very few bands of our generation who are together and still around. It's a great thing in fact. We do fight. Yes, but what is more important is to keep that flow of dialogue open."

American Idol: Red Carpet and Post-Show Report

New York Post, NY
May 24, 2007

...Nearly two interview-filled hours after her emotional coronation, Ms. Sparks made her way to the pressroom for a conference with the media, as runner-up Blake Lewis and several of the guest musicians had done earlier. Following are highlights from these Q&As and interviews on the red carpet...

Joe Perry

While he can't hit Steven Tyler high notes, Sanjaya Malakar impressed the Aerosmith guitarist. "He's just such a great guy and so easy going. It was just a lot of fun for me." So much so that there's talk of Aerosmith mentoring contestants next season. "After talking to some of the contestants and hanging around it's such a really cool and loose thing for such a huge show," he reflected. Aerosmith is gearing up for an international tour that will include the Middle East, Russia and the Hyde Park Festival in the U.K. "We're playing in places that we haven't played in years. We're going to be over there for two months."

Tom Checks In - Sao Paulo

Aero Force One
May 23, 2007

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here’s a little brain belch that came out when we were in Brazil. Sorry it took so long to edit and post it. Actually I’m NOT sorry. As a rock and roller it’s my right (and my responsibility) to be scatterbrained and late with everything.
Wow that felt good.

We got in really late last night. Went to sleep at around 5:00. Got up at 1:00, had lunch with Joey and Donny then we sat out by the pool with Brad. There’s lots of kids at the hotel. Very emotional and unafraid to approach and ask for autographs and pictures. Actually most of them are afraid but do it anyway which I respect.

Went over to sound check at about 6:30. Big huge Soccer stadium The stage is really high up. We went over a bunch of songs and I tried out all of my basses. The Parker was too mid range-y, the Tompkins was a little bottomy but the Sadowskys felt good. I’m going to play the Blonde for most of the show except for when I need my 5 string. Gotta watch out because I’m getting tingling in my last two fingers of my left hand. Stand up straight!!

Got back from Sound check and went down to the bar. Hung out with the promoter and talked about the world of live music and just the world in general. Stayed for an hour or so, now I’m back in the room. Strange to be alone. I feel like I should be back downstairs socializing but it’s already 2:00 and I don’t want to be burnt. I want to be f@#&ing good tomorrow night. Maybe solitude is the price. Maybe it’s the reward.

- Midnight –

I just walked into my room after the show in Sao Paulo. I’m trying to make sense of the hurricane of thoughts going through my head. I think there’s part of me that thinks I’m still on stage. The systems haven’t slowed down much. Maybe it was the hair-raising police escort. My socks are soaking wet. The rest of my clothes are too but they’re already in a bag going back to the gig to be put in the road case and then cleaned before the next show in Buenos Aires.

It feels weird to transition from the energy of the show to the intense suspense of the ride back to the hotel. My room is silent except for the clicking of my tired fingertips on my computer keyboard. I’m wondering if I’ll be able to describe the night. There are so many parallel thoughts and emotions going through me. Sao Paulo and Brazil in general seem to inspire emotion. The people here seem to be used to having their emotions show. I can’t say I know enough about the country to be sure but that’s been my impression of the last three days.

The lobby’s been packed almost the whole time with fans that are beyond fans. Sometimes it’s a bit much but in general it seems to recharge the batteries. You can’t be blasé about being in a band when these people are throwing out so much enthusiasm.

I expected it to be the same when we got to the gig and we weren’t disappointed.

This was a big stadium show that we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. We haven’t played in Brazil or Argentina or Mexico for thirteen years but we well remember the intensity of the crowds. It makes it easy. When the audience is supplying so much of the energy we can relax and just have a good time. Not that we...

You know what? I’m going to have to wait ‘til later to describe the whole day. Right now I have to concentrate on what was happening onstage and immediately afterwards.

We had to do a runner which is when the band goes straight from the stage to the cars at the end of the show in order not to get caught at the venue for hours as the place clears out. We had a police escort tonight. The motorcycle cops here use super agile bikes. They look like big dirt bikes and whatever they are they’re really fast. The streets were full of people and cars and buses and trucks. In order to get us through the throngs of pedestrians they had their sirens going full blast and their red lights blazing away. They cleared a swath by whipping back and forth like slalom skiers. The people sort of calmly parted like the red sea as if wondering what the fuss was all about. A few gave the finger which was funny. The bikes would lunge right up to people nearly ramming them as they charged ahead. I could barely watch.

The suspense was unrelenting. I thought any minute a bike was going to wipe out or somebody on the street would get hit but somehow we got back here without a scratch. We lined up outside the lobby and took pictures with the cops. I still love the irony of that situation. Usually when cops and long haired freaks are in the same picture it means someone got arrested.

Tomorrow we head down to Buenos Aires. It’s good to be down here after all this time

Joe Perry To Perform Tonight - American Idol

TMZ.com
May 23, 2007

Kelly Clarkson may be feuding with her label head Clive Davis, but she's got nothing but love for "American Idol."

TMZ has learned that Kelly -- and all winners from seasons past, except Fantasia -- will be back performing on the "American Idol" stage for tonight's finale.

Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks are headed to the Kodak Theater, but Fantasia Barrino won't be, since she is headlining Oprah Winfrey's production of "The Color Purple" on Broadway.

Sources tell TMZ Gladys Knight will perform "Midnight Train to Georgia" with the top six female finalists, while Smokey Robinson will join the top six male finalists for a rendition of "Ooh Baby Baby." Most recently booted finalist Melinda Doolittle will sing with brother and sister gospel duo BeBe and CeCe Winans, while the hairiffic Sanjaya duets with Aerosmith's Joe Perry to the Kinks' "You Really Got Me." It's sure to be an unbeweavable night!

Beat-boxing finalist Blake Lewis will show off his mad skillz against rapper Doug E. Fresh, and then duet with fellow finalist and probable winner, Jordin Sparks, to the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There." Since producers were able to finally get clearance to use Beatles music, a medley of Fab Four hits will be performed as well....

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler gives his take -

Times of India, Bangalore Times, India
May 22, 2007

On the Grammies, American Idol and rock music today
in this BT exclusive.

If you had to describe Aerosmith and its music in one sentence...

America's greatest rock 'n' roll band!

Who have been your biggest influences?

One of my personal biggest influences was my father, Victor Tallarico. He practised every day on a Steinway grand in our small apartment and I listened to him play the classics. I started singing when I was three in front of family and friends; later from watching bands like The Kinks, The Beatles and The Hullabaloos, I realised I could really sing. A big mention needs to go to The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger is my hero to this day.

You've rocked with some of the best musicians in your shows. Share a few great/fun/wacky experiences with us.

The first real big thing for me was in the 60s, pre-Aerosmith days. I was in a band that opened for The Beach Boys. It meant everything to me, because I used to listen to them at home. Bands like that, their music explained life to me.

Aerosmith has not seen too many changes from its original line-up. What makes you guys stay together?

There are few bands from our generation who are still around. It's because they either say 'f*** you!' or they fight. I've given Joe (Perry) the finger plenty of times, but it's all about talking now.

Hundreds of screaming fans at your concerts or applause from your peers as you walk up to pick up a Grammy?

Without our fans, we wouldn't be nominated for, let alone win a Grammy. That's amazing, but nothing beats walking out and performing in front of thousands of people who are there to see you.

Armageddon's Don't Want to Miss a Thing is one of your best known hits. How do you change gears to compose for movies?

That song was actually written by Diane Warren; Joe helped her with some of it, but it was mostly Diane. That song was great and helped introduce us to a new audience. It was apparently supposed to be sung by U2, but after Liv (Tyler) was cast in Armageddon, they had the idea of us doing it.

After American Idol, reality shows are big when it comes to finding talent. Do you endorse such methods?

A band that came out of one of those reality shows in Britain recently covered Walk This Way - I'm not going to criticise it because it was for charity. I'm not sure how I feel about those kinds of shows to be honest.

If you (as Aerosmith or as a solo performer) had to collaborate with any two new artists, who would they be and why?

I'm really into bands with that bluesy feel to them like Kings of Leon. There's an Australian band called Wolfmother who have this Led Zep thing going on and I was always a fan of Zeppelin.

Classic rock seems to survive while younger and trendier acts fail or break up. Your take?

Our style of music was something that we had to build up over time, constantly collaborating. Its roots in blues, which has been around forever, gives it that timelessness.

Around Boston

Boston Globe, MA
May 21, 2007

" . . . . Aerosmith's Tom Hamilton and his wife, Terry , know how to work a room. The long time supporters of YouthCare, which aids children with autism to develop social skills so that they can succeed, helped raise a record $350,000 at the nonprofit "Give Children a Chance" benefit at the Cyclorama the other night. The bassist and his bandmates are featured in the Sports Illustrated 2007 swimsuit issue. So Tom enlisted the mag's help for auction items and support for the fund-raiser. . . . "

#22. Aerosmith

The oldest member of Boston's rock royalty, singer Steven Tyler turns 60 next year, and persistent health problems have prevented the band from touring Europe for the best part of a decade. Lead guitarist Joe Perry is understandably excited about their first British show in eight years,

'We really feel like we have something to prove to you guys,' he says. 'As a band, we're getting pretty close to the end. And while we've had some amazing shows in the States recently, and we know we can still rock, if you're not going to play London you may as well quit now.' Perry and Tyler were once nicknamed 'The Toxic Twins' for their excesses, but it's the band's solid gold back catalogue that has ensured a place in the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame. Of their live formula, Perry explains: 'It's all about the tension. With rock'n'roll it has to feel like a train almost coming off the tracks.'

Summer concert guide '07

London Free Press, Canada
May 19, 2007

This weekend, May's "two-four" holiday, is one traditional date for the start of summer in the London region.

Musically, summer really arrives in June, then heats up in July with the arrival of the free outdoor festivals in Victoria Park -- Sunfest and the Home County Folk Festival -- and their admission-charging relatives at Harris Park, downtown London and Sarnia's waterfront.

The concert calendar for those two months is full. It is not every 61-day span when you have a calendar with easy listening master John Tesh -- at Centennial Hall -- and wildman guitarslinger Ted Nugent -- at Rock the Park IV in Harris Park -- and ex-Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks -- at the John Labatt Centre.

Nicks turns 59 next Saturday. Her Crystal Visions tour reaches the downtown London arena on June 25.

Gwen Stefani and the White Stripes also have separate dates at the arena. So do the Moody Blues, who put me into dozeland on their first visit, but -- to be fair -- they're on the list that accompanies this article. So does Hilary Duff, who is older and tougher than on her previous visits. Duff is still a teen as she continues her odyssey into Cherdom.

All that proves there is a lot of choice in the two months. My own choices take in Home County, which has such attractions as broadcaster Jowi Taylor and his Six String Nation guitar plus Mae Moore and Andrea Koziol and the Dixie Flyers, to name just three of the fine London-tied performers on hand.

Then, there is Sunfest, which brings a world of worldbeat to Victoria Park.

There is a new Canadian jazz focus -- or I should say even more Canadian jazz -- this time. Italy's Fiamma Fumana was amazing in its blend of traditional accordion and bagpipes with techno and electronica in 2004. Can't wait to see what they have done this time. I do know Belize's Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective sound terrific on CD and the other new-to-Sunfest acts have great reps.

What about other outdoor shows? The 2007 edition of Bluesfest promises the great Los Lobos and Robert Cray as two headliners at its King-and-Clarence location.

Aerosmith and Nickelback are among the headliners at Rogers Sarnia Bayfest 2007, back-to-back behemoths in July.

This list is hardly the whole summer. Here are some names I'd recommend: Besnard Lakes, Pam Brooks, DK Ibomeka, Cheap Trick, Tom Lockwood, Catherine McInnes, Sirens, '63 Monroe. All have impressed in person or on recordings. Or both -- even if my Cheap Trick vinyl is in the basement somewhere.

Sure, there is more to summer. This is a start.

As for August, Aeolian Hall has just announced its third Summer Arts Soiree, a multi-disciplinary festival from Aug. 13 to 31. The musical performers include Irish traditional singer Sean Keane, Canada's Destino Tenors, and the hall's chief executive and president, pianist Clark Bryan and his piano duet partner Marion Miller.

Canadian singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright plays Centennial Hall on Aug. 29.

We'll get to August's list later in the season. Right now, we have June and July just over the "two-four" horizon.

Concert season opens: Music for every taste

The Windsor Star, Canada
May 19, 2007

The Police and Genesis headline a diverse concert list of more than 90 summer shows announced this week by the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Palace and the two outdoor amphitheatres under its supervision -- DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston and Meadow Brook Music Festival in Rochester -- have music for just about every taste, starting May 25 at DTE with traditional opener Eddie Money.

Because of changes in tour routing, there are no longer subscription series at DTE and Meadow Brook. All shows are sold separately or in packages of four. Some concerts have special $10 and $15 lawn tickets.

The schedule features the summer's two major rock reunions -- The Police on July 17, and Genesis on Sept. 30, both at the Palace -- and the first tour in years by Canada's Rush, August 28 at DTE.

Gordon Lightfoot returns after several years, Sept. 15 at Meadow Brook, while Barenaked Ladies head to DTE June 15.

Here's the list as of today. For prices, when shows go on sale, and package offers, go to www.palacenet.com. Ticket prices are also available in The Windsor Star's concert listings every Friday.

(Legend: DTE -- DTE Energy Music Theatre; MB -- Meadow Brook; PAH -- Palace of Auburn Hills. Special lawn prices in effect at shows with *.)

[List here.]

One concert date will be announced later -- Brad Paisley/Jack Ingram/Kellie Pickler/Taylor Swift at DTE.

Aerosmith will also perform at DTE, but a date and prices are still to be determined.

Other shows will be added in the coming weeks.

On Board - Geared up for skate shop

Aerosmith drummer teams up with Technical owner to open Newbury Street store

Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer won’t be promoting a new recording at his next big launch party. Instead, he’ll be celebrating the opening of a skateboard and clothing boutique in the heart of Boston’s fashion district.

Kramer has teamed up with John Nichols, the owner of the Technical skate shop on Route 53 in Norwell, to open another Technical store on Newbury Street in the Back Bay.

"The thing that I first picked up about him was his passion about the (skateboarding) culture," said Kramer, a Marshfield resident. "I know, from my own experience, that somebody I feel that kind of passion from doing something they love to do is going to be successful."

The second Technical store is slated to open on June 30 in a 1,000-square-foot, first-floor space between Exeter and Fairfield streets. Kramer and Nichols hope to appeal to hard-core skaters as well as casual fans of the culture and clothing.

"It’s not going to be the type of store where you feel intimidated to walk into it," said Nichols, who grew up in Norwell and still lives there. "If you’re too involved in a subculture, you can’t see those who would like to be involved. The skate shops and surf shops that I had growing up had been so involved in their own subculture that they didn’t see the outside people who would like to be involved."

Fans of the Technical shop in Norwell will notice some differences. The Boston shop will have a much heavier emphasis on clothing, including a wider range of artist-inspired "streetwear," and it will have a more upscale ambience.

Kramer is still quite busy with his music career: The band, which has been together since the early 1970s, will soon embark on another European tour.

He has also followed his passion for cars by becoming a co-owner of the Corvette Mike New England dealership in Plymouth.

Kramer was inspired by the love of skateboarding that he saw in his son Jesse and Nichols, his son’s friend, -- to pursue his latest venture.

Kramer has played an active role as a partner in the Boston store, bouncing promotional ideas off Nichols, picking out inventory and helping Nichols and his father, Charles, search for the right location.

"It was something I could learn about quickly," Kramer said. "I wear the clothes myself. It was an easy fit. It wasn’t really something that I was stretching to do. Now, I’m learning more about retailing and what is involved to put a store together and all the work that goes behind it."

No date has been set for a grand-opening party, although Kramer and Nichols say they expect it will happen sometime in July. Kramer said he will regularly visit the store when he’s in Massachusetts.

"We tour ...but it’s a lot less than we used to," Kramer said. "I’m home a lot more. I’ll spend more time with my store in Plymouth. I’ll spend more time with my store in Boston."

Kramer said he’s a 50/50 partner in the Boston shop with Nichols.

"John and I will make decisions together," Kramer said. "He’ll most likely be the one to carry them out."

Nichols, meanwhile, will hire a manager to run his Norwell shop as he takes over management full-time in Boston. He said he has already hired three people to work in the Boston store and expects to hire a couple more.

Nichols’ first business venture was Vjolt Enterprises, a clothing-design firm that he started when he was a junior at Stonehill College in 1997. He still runs Vjolt out of his house, but spends most of his time with Technical.

Nichols opened the Technical store in Norwell seven years ago, and worked hard to make it a part of the community. His mother, Patricia, played a crucial role in volunteering and getting to know the kids who hung out at the shop before she died last year. Nichols continues to sponsor skateboarders who skate at local parks and offers after-school classes at schools in Norwell and Hingham.

"I didn’t want to come into the business with an air of ‘I have all the answers,’ " Nichols said. "It was really a sense of getting the community involved and letting the area dictate the vibe of the store."

Fair adds country and rock acts

San Luis Obispo Tribune, CA
May 17, 2007

Just one more Main Grandstand Arena show remains to be named after the California Mid-State Fair announced country band Rascal Flatts and hard rockers Godsmack will be part of this year’s concert lineup.

The fair also announced two free shows. Teen pop stars Jonas Brothers and classic rockers Foghat will perform July 30 and Aug. 1, respectively.

Fair chief executive Vivian Robertson said Wednesday she believes this year’s concert lineup is precedent-setting.

“I feel we have the best entertainment lineup that we’ve ever had,” Robertson said.

The one main grandstand show that has not been announced should be revealed soon, Robertson said.

Tickets for Aerosmith, which will perform July 25, the fair’s opening night, sold out in 3 1/2 hours last month.

Robertson reported strong ticket sales for country stars Martina McBride, performing July 31 with Little Big Town, and Dierks Bently, performing Aug. 1 with LeAnn Rimes.

Tickets for Bob Dylan (July 27), Daughtry (July 28) and Chris Botti (Aug. 3) go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.

Tickets for Rascal Flatts, named best vocal group at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Tuesday night, will be $78, $68 and $53, the same price as Aerosmith. Tickets go on sale June 8 at 10 a.m.

Superstars Make a Splash at the Cove

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Chelsea, Steven, and Liv Tyler, at the grand opening of The Cove Atlantis on Paradise Island.

Atlantis, Sol Kerzner's vast water-themed hotel complex in the Bahamas, is stocked to the gills with dolphins, sharks, and stingrays. But last weekend it played host to an exotic creature of a different stripe: the modern celebrity at play. For the opening of The Cove, a more upscale resort-within-a-resort featuring its own beach, pools, and catalog-come-to-life Vivre store, Kerzner reeled in a barrelful of movie stars (John Travolta, Lindsay Lohan), music bigs (Steven Tyler, Kanye West), and sports giants (Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson).

The extended weekend's festivities included performances by Janet Jackson and Aerosmith, a seventies-themed finale bash, a poolside fashion show where models sported Kai Milla's resort dresses and easy beach cover-ups while Tyra Banks looked on in a green bikini, and a fireworks display so massive they may have to cancel the Fourth of July for lack of supplies. For some guests, though, the highlight was the intimate birthday dinner that Milla held for her husband, Stevie Wonder, on Thursday night. From a small stage set up within Mesa Grill, Joss Stone, John Legend, Nancy Wilson, Mos Def, Indie.Arie, and others serenaded Wonder. Surrounded by his children ("I seem to have a lot of them," he said wryly), the birthday boy blew out the candles on his cake and lit up the house with an incandescent rendition of All I Do.

How much all this cost Kerzner is anyone's guess. But you get the feeling that he'll come out ahead. As bleary-eyed guests got ready to depart on Sunday morning, the rumor going around was that one of their number had dropped a cool seven figures at the Atlantis casino the previous night. It was that kind of weekend.

Hollywood has descended on the Bahamas this weekend to celebrate the opening of The Cove Atlantis adult luxury resort. Stevie Wonder, who partied late Thursday night for his birthday (he turns 57 on Sunday), missed his wife Kai Milla's first fashion show Friday afternoon, poolside at The Cove's adults-only Cain section.

But Babyface was there, along with Laura Prepon, Cicely Tyson and Bo Derek. Derek, in a form-fitting dive shirt, had spent the earlier part of her Friday riding waterslides with beau John Corbett....

And in the crowds this weekend, there are lots of celebs.

[Janet] Jackson is to perform Friday night, and more stars are expected, including Liv Tyler and father Steven Tyler, Kelsey Grammer, John Legend and Roberta Flack....

News From The Road

Next Stop Dubai!!!!!

The guys finished up their tour of South America and Mexico last week and needless to say it was a huge success. Aerosmith played to an estimated 220,000 people for the 5 dates. Hopefully it won't be another 13 years before the guys make it down there again. I have a feeling the band will be back there real soon.

Steven and Joe spent 4 days in the LA sun while Brad, Joey and Tom headed back to Boston for a few days off before reconvening in Las Vegas. Brad took part in the Richard Petty Experience. He was clocked at about 160 mph. Steven spent the evening at the Hard Rock Hotel where they premiered a new Steven Tyler display. One of his suits from the last tour is up there now. Go check it out! The Vegas show was something else. It wasn’t your typical Aerosmith show. The guys played at Mandalay Bay for the first time for a charity concert for the Lili Claire foundation. Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame was the MC. The guy’s love playing Vegas and this time Joe made it through the whole show with not so much as a scratch. The next day the guys flew back east with Steven getting dropped off in NYC while Joe, Tom and Joey went home to Boston. Brad flew to his home in Charlotte.

On Wednesday the guys officially finished up this leg of shows by taking part in the Robin Hood Foundation Gala and Auction at the Javits Center in NYC. Funnyman, Jon Stewart was the host of the event and it had some very heavy hitters in the media and entertainment field there. Ben Affleck, Michael Douglas, Tom Brokaw and perhaps the greatest quarterback in the history of football, Tom Brady was in attendance. As you all know Mr. Brady has 3 Super bowl rings and it’s only a matter of time before he surpasses Joe Montana in all categories. All right save the hate email, I’m just getting psyched for this years Patriots season and the debut of Randy Moss in a Pats uni. By the way, Steven auctioned off a chance to sing with Aerosmith and it fetched a mere $800,000 dollars split by two people. One of the winners Dee Dee Ricks helped Steven with Sweet Emotion while an unidentified winner was just happy with the Demon of Screamin’ belting out Walk this Way for the millionth time. Joe and Joey both sold off the instruments they used that night. Joey gave his DW drum set that he has had for the past few years and Joe gave up his beautiful Dan Armstrong guitar that takes a beaten every night during “Draw the Line” went home with some lucky winners. It was a great night for a great cause.

Family Affair in London:

Before you start having visions of Mister French, Buffy, Jody and Mrs. Beasley the bad boys from Boston will be joined at the Hyde Park show by former Space Hog and present son in law Royston Langdon’s band “Arckid.” Happy belated birthday Roy! Also on the bill on the second stage will Joe’s sons’ band TAB. Tony and Adrian Perry along with school chum Benz will make their debut on the other side of the pond at Hyde Park, but not before making a return engagement in the Peoples Republic of Cambridge Mass to play at TT the Bears Place on Saturday May 12th.

On a sad note, Aerosmith nation lost a true friend this week. Joann Pierce lost her battle with MS and Cancer. Joann and her husband Rick have been married for over 25 years. They are from the Buffalo area (Frewsburg, NY) and were soul mates in every sense. Joann was diagnosed with MS around the same time and eventually landed in a wheelchair. But it didn't stop her from going to as many shows as she could and meeting the band several times over the years. As her illness progressed, they planned a cruise, but instead they went on the West Coast Travel Package during the Get a Grip tour (1994). That trip changed their lives in the best possible ways. They made friends that remain to this day. The doctor, who had warned them the trip could be bad for her health, actually said it helped her. Over the years, they did so many trips to see the band. It was truly life changing.

Rick was a constant presence by her side; Meeting the band brought Joann so much joy.....her whole face lit up, her smile stretched from ear to ear.

This all just happened so quickly. Last week she was given two months to live. Today she is gone. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago. It came back with a mission. But she did go in peace. This NFTR is dedicated in the memory of Joann may she find peace and an IPOD full of A-Smith upstairs. Dream On!

Joe with Glen Hughes - Photo: Ross Halfin

What report wouldn’t be complete without a mention of our favorite Shutterbug Ross Halfin? Old Amber Ross was in LA last week shooting various people and being interviewed for an 80’s Canadian Metal band named “Anvil.” I needed an “Advil” after about 5 minutes of listening to him scream at the poor front desk girl at the hotel when she addressed him as Ross and not Mr. Halfin International Man of Misery. I mean Mystery. All joking aside Ross took some great shots of the hugely talented “Glenn Hughes.” Glenn and Joe ran into each other in the hotel patio and got caught up. Later Joe told me that Aerosmith (back in the 1325 days) used to listen to the Deep Purple albums “Machine Head” and “Burn” constantly. Glenn was the bass player on the “Burn” album.

Joe also spent some time with Jeff Beck at the pool of the hotel. Jeff was in town to perform with Kelly Clarkson at the American Idol show.

Next up the band will travel to Dubai, India and Europe. I’m sure there will be lots to talk about in the next report.

See You on the Road!

John B.

PS. Lisa Martineau contributed to this report. Not the Ross Halfin part. That was all me.

Bayfest lineup grows even bigger

Port Huron Times Herald, MI
May 1, 2007

Festival gains another evening in annual concert

First, the bad news - Aerosmith is no longer the opening act at this year's Rogers Sarnia Bayfest.

Don't panic. Steven Tyler and the gang still are going to perform July 19 in Sarnia's Centennial Park. It's just the concert festival no longer begins on July 19.

That brings us to the good news - a concert July 18 featuring Canadian rock band Nickelback has been added to the schedule.

The addition of one of the decade's biggest rock acts only enhances what organizers were saying was the biggest lineup in the festival's nine-year history. Since 2000, Nickelback has sold more than 21 million copies of its albums worldwide and topped charts with such singles as How You Remind Me, Photograph and Figured You Out.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

This will be the band's second appearance at the festival. It was a late addition to the schedule for 2002, announced just five weeks before the festival.

"The show went very well," festival co-founder Michele Stokley said. "Since then, the band's come a long way in terms of popularity, and we're very happy to have them back."

Bayfest never has had a show on Wednesday night. The festival will be from July 18 to 21.

"We originally wanted them for a (July 22) show, and they weren't available," Stokley said. "The band is so big, we felt very confident putting them on a Wednesday."

Fans who bought three-day passes for concerts featuring Aerosmith, Def Leppard and Toby Keith will be able to add Nickelback to their passes for an extra $30 Canadian...
