Sure, Carly Simon bears a passing resemblance to the frontman, but she doesn’t have the acting chops or the truly separated-at-birth qualities to understand why he still walks this way and talks this way. ....In its June 5 issue, right-wing political magazine National Review names the top 50 conservative rock ’n’ roll songs. The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” topped the list, followed by the Beatles’ “Taxman.” The list was born last year when the magazine’s national political reporter, John J. Miller, asked online readers to nominate their favorite conservative songs. The only criteria: the lyrics had to have a conservative slant, such as preaching family values or advocating for a libertarian government....

Aerosmith also made the cut with “Janie’s Got A Gun” (No. 28) for showing “how the right to bear arms can protect women from sexual predators.” Miller... has yet to hear from any of the artists who made the cut. “I’m waiting for Pete Townshend to call,” Miller said.

Star Denis Leary is thrilled the Love In An Elevator star wants to appear, but is convinced viewers would never believe the distinctive rocker could be a fireman. He explains, "Steven Tyler's a huge fan of the show, and I'm trying to figure out how to put him on. "He's not going to pass as a fireman. Do we have him play himself? A guy who looks like Steven Tyler? It's a nice problem to have!"

Mary Weiss, the leather-clad lead singer of the '60s girl group the Shangri-Las, has been recording a new album for the first time since the '70s... Weiss, whose sassy voice spat out... the original "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," also will launch a tour. Technically, the last time Weiss' voice was heard on record was when "Remember" was covered by Aerosmith, and she did an uncredited backing vocal on it for the boys.

He's still not cool, never was, but as his headliner tour with Jewel arrives on Thursday, this Orlando-bred singer-songwriter is exactly what he wants to be.....

In addition to his famous, Grammy-winning Santana collaboration on "Smooth," Thomas has written for Seal and traded harmonies with Willie Nelson. He plans to do a few numbers on stage with Jewel as part of the current tour and was headed into the studio last week to work on a track for Aerosmith.....

Last week, two lucky Aero Force One members... got to hang out with Joey Kramer at his photo shoot in Boston!

The two die-hard Aerosmith fans and their guests arrived... at the legendary Hard Rock in Boston for lunch. From there it was off to the gleaming Hornick Grivlin photo studio in South Boston -- a huge warehouse with killer rock photographs all over the walls.

Joey's drumkit from the Rockin' The Joint Tour sat proudly in the middle of a room draped in all white. The drumkit itself was immaculate in white with silver glitter drumheads. Joey's longtime drum tech, McGee, was there and explained the finer points of setting up Joey's drums. Then Rob and his lovely assistant Hilary showed us all the other drum ads that will be part of this greater series for "Drum Workshop" -- all of them featured a monochromatic backdrop with the drumkit in the background and the drummer sitting in a chair in front of it. The ads included Dylan session musician Jim Keltner, Abe Laboriel Jr. from Paul McCartney's band, and Josh Freese from A Perfect Circle & Nine Inch Nails.

Joey arrived around 2:00, and hugged the fans with hellos and thank you's. His bag of "props" for the photo shoot included some wild sneakers that outglittered his drumkit! For two hours the fans watched Rob and Joey finesse an incredible round of photos. There was lots of goofing around in between. Then Rob took pictures of Joey with the fans on the set, and Joey autographed items for all of his special guests. Each fan also got an autographed, banged-up drumstick...

Steven Tyler is feeling better, so Aerosmith is ready to get back to work. The band has confirmed that they'll start work on their next album on Saturday (May 20th)....

Tyler previously told us that he and lead guitarist Joe Perry have a pretty simple method for picking which tracks to work on: "The songs we pick out of the 20 or 30 songs we write for an album, we pick because I look at Joe and say, 'Hey, man, could you play that to the audience?' 'No.' 'Well, then let's not put it on the record.'"

Bassist Tom Hamilton told us that the album is being targeted for release in September, when Aerosmith will go back out on the road.

Look for Boston rockers Aerosmith to get back to work on a new album later this month. And they've picked the perfect day - May 20th - to begin laying down tracks.

"It's Armed Forces Day," reveals Steven Tyler, "and we're going in with guns ablazing!"

Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton recently told TheRockRadio.com that the band would be back on tour in September, and they should be able to bang out a new album fairly easily: "You know, we're being positive and ambitious, and we'll see how much we can get done between now and then. I don't see any reason why we couldn't - we've got a bunch of material that we really love that we just haven't used in the past, so we can use a few of those as a starting point, and then write a bunch of new ones."

Aerosmith was forced to cancel a bunch of shows on their spring tour after frontman Steven Tyler suffered a broken blood vessel in his voice box. He recently told Rollingstone.com that the injury is all healed.

Hey Folks!

report. The guys should be hitting the studio very shortly and will continue to
work over the summer. As I write this, the band is scattered across North
America but should all be back in the friendly confines of old Beantown in a few weeks.


Joe and I check out the Washington Monument last year. I believe it was the
day after the DC show. Joe stayed in town to visit with his son Adrian.

Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and a friend rode their Choppers around before meeting two female friends for lunch at Cafe Med in Hollywood, California, the other day. Steven was a little wobbly as he rode away after having lunch, perhaps he is still nervous riding a motorcycle, after his 1981 accident when he split open his heel when his motorcycle crashed into a tree. According to People magazine, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has a new "squeeze": tour promoter Erin Brady. The two are vacationing in Mexico while the rocker, who had throat surgery in March, rests his voice. He's due to begin recording the band's 15th studio album in Boston, May 20....

Aerosmith's latest release is the concert set "Rockin' The Joint (Live At The Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas)", which was recorded at a January, 2002, show. It's available on both CD and DVD.

Aerosmith's forthcoming CD will be their first studio project since 2004's "Honkin' on Bobo".

A year ago last night, Paul A. Caruso Jr. was on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," playing drums behind his friend and neighbor Joe Perry.

For many rock 'n' roll musicians who cut their teeth in the Boston club scene of the 1970s, the chance to perform with Aerosmith's lead guitarist on national television might be a suitable career finale. For Mr. Caruso, it was more of a grace note.

A gifted drummer who could play several instruments, Mr. Caruso could take the power of rock music and mold it into something prayerful and use his spiritual grounding to make his rock drumming more powerful. He was as comfortable playing in the front of a church as he was before cheering rock fans.

"He was able to balance these worlds," said Dan Burns, a longtime friend who attended Holy Family Church in Duxbury with Mr. Caruso.

"Paul was one of the very few people who was not swept up in the Aerosmith glamour, or the perceived glamour," Perry said yesterday. "He was pretty matter of fact. He just loved to make music."

Mr. Caruso, who coproduced and played drums on "Mercy," a Perry instrumental that was nominated for a Grammy Award, collapsed in his Kingston house Wednesday and died. He was 50. The family is awaiting results of tests to determine the cause of death.

"I'm in shock about it," said Perry, who had planned to work with Mr. Caruso in a studio on Monday. "He was the engineer in my studio and worked with me on my whole solo record last year. I've known him for 18 years, ever since I moved to Duxbury. . . . His presence will be more than sorely missed in our neck of the woods. He was a good friend and a great musician."

Mr. Caruso grew up in East Boston and Revere, where he helped formed Sass, a power trio. In 1979 he went to meet with The Atlantics when the band was looking for a new drummer.

"He walked in, and he was very sharp," said Tom Hauck of Gloucester, who was a guitarist with the band. "He had on a summer-weight sports jacket and sunglasses, and he looked like a million bucks. He started playing, and it was instant chemistry."

Valued for his musicianship and his ear for how a song should sound, Mr. Caruso helped shape "Lonely Hearts," perhaps the band's best-known single.

"He had wonderful technical skill for a rock drummer," Hauck said. "He had a light touch when he needed it, and he could play very loudly and very powerfully. He had a musicality about him that came through in his drumming. And he sang high harmonies for The Atlantics -- he had a beautiful voice."

Mr. Caruso also had a maturity that was rare in any rock music scene.

"He was a consummate diplomat," Hauck said. "He really knew how to work with other people and make them feel at ease. He was the opposite of the quintessential rock star."

The Atlantics split up in 1983, and Mr. Caruso moved a couple of years later to Kingston, where he built Bay Farm Sound Studio as part of his house. He and his wife, Susan, had two sons and had been a couple for about 30 years, since they met at a fashion show.

"He was just very grounded here," she said. "He loved his family and was just a great dad."

In his studio, Mr. Caruso worked with a variety of musicians, some well-known, others less so. He treated them all with respect and dignity, whether the musician was his neighbor Perry, part of the rock 'n' roll firmament, or a teenager he was encouraging to sing as part of the youth music program at St. Mary's Church in Hanover.

"He was a great perfectionist, but he would really bring the best out of everybody," Burns said. ''He had the ability to do that without being browbeating or overbearing. He would do it by encouraging. He would affirm you."

Mr. Caruso's musical association with Perry began after they became neighbors.

"One day he just went over, and they hit it off," his wife said.

The two were both adept at many instruments. When Perry released his eponymous album last year, he played all the instruments, except drums, which Mr. Caruso played.

The two also shared producing duties on the album. Among the tracks was "Mercy," which was nominated for a Grammy as best rock instrumental performance, but did not win at the ceremony in February.

Mr. Caruso also was an engineer on two Aerosmith albums, "Just Push Play" in 2001 and "Honkin' on Bobo" in 2004.

"He was active in any engineering aspect in the last four to five years since we've been recording on the South Shore," Perry said.

Mr. Caruso was rare, Perry said, in that his experience bridged the time from when studios recorded on tape to the current era of digital sound and computers.

"And he was a slamming drummer," Perry said. "He also had formal music training, which is rare in the rock 'n' roll world. He could sit down and play any kind of music, but he loved to rock."

Unlike many who long for the rock lifestyle of excess, though, Mr. Caruso was more at home at his home -- and at church.

"He had a very deep faith, which I think influenced his whole life," his wife said.

"His faith is so much a part of his life," said Burns, who lives in Duxbury. "He had this incredible desire -- and we talked about it often -- to use his talents and gifts to feed the spiritual life."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Caruso leaves two sons, Christian and Zachary; his father, Paul Caruso Sr. of Winchester; and his mother, Claire Nye of Weymouth.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church in Duxbury.

Pownall has been an award-winning photojournalist for 30 years. He worked on staff for The Chicago Tribune from 1968 to 1970. His images taken during the Chicago Democratic Convention riots of August, 1968, were published widely and carried around the world via AP. He also specialized in entertainment assignments for the paper. His first assignments were Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and Cream - a dream come true for a frustrated musician-turned-photographer.

He has been based in Boston since 1970. He began freelancing in the music/entertainment business in the early '70s, with local clients that include Aerosmith, Boston, The Cars, The J Geils Band and Duke & the Drivers. He became an assignment photographer for Rolling Stone, which led to work for many other publications such as Spin, Hit Parader, People, Guitar Player and Newsweek.

...Award-Winning music journalist Steven Rosen has been writing about, and interviewing icons of rock ‘n’ roll for the past thirty-five years. After almost 4 decades of archiving these priceless tapes, Rosen has finally licensed them to be released as spoken word CDs.

Sly Stone, the reclusive musical genius and funk/rock pioneer, was on stage for "about 30 seconds" of the big live Grammy Awards tribute to him this past February, former Sly and the Family Stone bandmate and saxophonist Jerry Martini figures. But you have to admit -- it was a pretty exciting 30 seconds. "He hasn't been on stage in a long time," Martini says of Stone......

The Grammys also afforded Martini a chance to play with younger superstar musicians, like the Black Eyed Peas and young British soul singer Joss Stone, whose music has obviously been influenced by The Family Stone. It's clear, he says, that the experience lives on.

"Joss Stone was so cute. I have grandchildren older than her. I have socks older than her," he says. "She was so lovely. I really understood why she is such a success. And we had Joe Perry and Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith) up there jamming with us. It blew us away."

"Just wanted to give ya'll a quick update on Steven's condition, and the timeframe for recording.

He is healing quite well, however the timetable for recording has slipped just a tad. It's now looking as the boys will get back into the studio on or around June 1st to lay down the tracks on the new album. They do still plan on hitting the road this fall, and finishing up the album later this year for an early/mid 2007 release...."
