Original Stone May Roll Into Grammys

Contra Costa Times, CA
January 31, 2006

It seems like the rumors may be true this time. But we're not laying any bets yet.

Still, the much-hyped reports of a Sly Stone appearance/performance/sighting/emergence from obscurity at next week's Grammys appears to be true. A member of the original Family Stone told the Times the whole original band is planning on being there, the first time they've been together in more than a decade, though he declined to say whether they'd perform.

Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler told the Times on Tuesday that, as far as he knows, he and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry are slated to perform with Stone and others during the scheduled Sly and the Grammys' Family Stone tribute. But he admitted to not having a lot of details.

The awards show will be broadcast from Los Angeles on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. on Channel 13 and 8 p.m. on Channel 5....

Joe Perry: Telephone Interview

Denver Post, CO
January 29, 2006

Aerosmith Still Soars

Aerosmith's origins are endearing. Steven Tyler, originally a drummer, met Joe Perry at an ice cream shop in Sunapee, N.H.

The band's legacy is impressive. Aerosmith was one of the biggest rock bands from one of the biggest rock decades, the '70s. It also enjoyed huge success in the 1980s.

But the reality of Aerosmith... is problematic for serious music fans. Some bands know when to say when. They know it's more than a little sad to play songs in middle-age that the band wrote when they were strutting twentysomethings. Yet it still works. In big numbers, even.

Aerosmith's durability surprises even Joe Perry, the band's guitarist and an icon in his own right.

"This Aerosmith thing constantly blows my mind, and it does the other guys' too, that we're able to carry on like this," Perry said recently via telephone. "It's been interesting, this classic rock swelling up underneath all the pop stuff that's going on. I don't know, there's something about good music - and it isn't just that I have a soft spot in my heart for those songs that I grew up with, that I cut my musical teeth on."

Aerosmith circa 2006 doesn't sound the same - listen to current recordings of their 30-year-old songs including "Dream On," "Walk This Way" or "Sweet Emotion" - and the members definitely don't look the same.

And what of the new music: Is it important enough, adding to its legacy in such a way that it justifies being made? They answered that question with the abominably named "Honkin' on Bobo," the band's alleged blues record from 2004 that was received with less enthusiasm than either of the band's last two live records.

On the live-music front, the band still sells out arenas. Is it Aerosmith's time to launch another tour? Or is it Aerosmith's time to say goodbye?

Perry says absolutely no to the latter, and nostalgia-hungry fans who have helped this tour sell out nationwide are in overwhelming agreement with him.

"I've never been in any other band, so I can't say why they stayed together or why they didn't, but I know that everybody here gives the best they can from night to night," Perry said. "It all ties in with the whole idea about being together for 35 years and how come we're still out there and playing. It's a legacy, and we have a certain amount of respect for that - and a lot of respect for our fans who have supported us throughout the years."

Fanning the flames

The fan support has been tremendous. And the band's ability to get along is remarkable.

"It still has its bumps and grinds, and we still have our arguments about stuff, but they seem a lot further apart," Perry said. "We still have a bigger mountain to climb, and that's keeping the band strong and keeping the music strong. And that hasn't changed in 30 years. We're constantly trying to play a better show than the one last night."

An admirable sentiment, but when you've been around for 35 years and honestly believe every show can be better than the previous one, you're a tad delusional. That's physically and musically impossible.

Still, Aerosmith has come a long way, and the band does have an unmatched legacy of brash rock 'n' roll and loud power-ballads - amid American bands, at least. The group came out of the gate strong in 1973, making seven potent records in seven years. The group stumbled into a druggy haze in the early '80s but hauled itself off the mat for what was, at the time, the greatest rock 'n' roll comeback story ever told.

The late '80s were kind to the band, and it sold more records than ever. The '90s were solid, with a massive soundtrack hit courtesy of the 1998 blockbuster "Armageddon." While its records aren't performing as they once did, the band - almost inexplicably - continues to sell well on tour.

Or maybe the band's enduring live popularity can be explained.

"You still have to go out and prove to the audience that you're worth the money they paid to see you," Perry said. "We managed to keep up with the technology, so the fans really get the whole thing - the lights and sound - and everything is better than it used to be.

"They don't want to watch people falling down, and nor do I. If I go see a band, I don't give a (expletive) about the personal problems. I paid my money. All it took for me to realize this was putting myself in their seat for three seconds and I saw, 'This has to be good.' "

The other harmony

The working relationships inside the band mean better organization, Perry said, and ultimately better shows.

"There's a lot less ego involved," he said. "Speaking for myself, I'm a lot less inclined to slam my point home. You know what I mean: There's a lot more parity amongst the band members as far as working things out, and everybody's got their strengths and weaknesses, and we all recognize them for what they are and it makes it a lot easier to make decisions and work together creatively.

"There are times where we're sitting in the room going over stuff, deciding on dates on a tour or talking about the color of T-shirts, and I swear it could have been 30 years ago," he said. "It's the same people, and when you feel those feelings about what the band is as a touchstone, it seems timeless. In our personal lives, we all have our own system for making it work, but as the five guys putting it together and playing rock 'n' roll, we do all that together."

In his months away from the band, Perry relishes time with his family in homes in Vermont and Florida. He says his life outside the band is crucial to his sanity. "It's so fleeting, this lifestyle," Perry said. "To hang your life on it is certain death."

The rock star must be left back on stage, Perry said, so he can fill other roles, including dad - his proudest title.

When it's time to rehearse or record, Perry and their bandmates head to Boston ... "and it's like we're still those 18-year old kids in the garage."

The current top headline on Aerosmith's website isn't about a band achievement, rather Perry's individual triumph: a Grammy nomination for rock instrumental performance. His track "Mercy" was the final song on last year's eponymous solo record, his first in more than 20 years. He's up against the likes of Stewart Copeland, Steve Vai and Les Paul for the Grammy.

"It really hit me sideways," Perry said of the nomination, noting that "Mercy" wasn't even a single. But it's what he said about the solo album that proves his musical dedication.

"With the solo record, I had a pile of music I felt I had to get out there," he said. "And it was a different set of circumstances than the solo record I put out 20 years ago. (This one) was from loving and recording music and playing my guitar and putting it out there, and that still burns inside for me ... It's still all there, intact, and it still blows my mind."

Reclusive funk-rock pioneer said to be discussing reunion on Grammy show, which plans tribute

Sly Stone, the reclusive, long-vanished funk-rock pioneer whose potent recordings in the late 1960s and early '70s altered the course of popular music, may be about to strut back into the public eye. Diary - January 27

The show in Dallas is massive and packed to the roof. Len is feeling better and graces us with his presence - a kind man, letting love rule etc. The Motor City Madman is backstage, Ted Nugent - seems he has relocated from the Motor City to Dallas to be with his chosen tribe, The Republicans! Ted invites himself onstage to play. He wanted to play Baby Please Don't Go but they settled on Train. I enjoyed Ted more than Rick Nielsen but then again I am a metal fan. Disappointingly they didn't finish with Stranglehold. Got some nice pics of Ted and Joe in Joe's inner sanctum. Managed to get back before the end and shot Joe before he came off stage. Steven brought his son Taj out to sing Happy Birthday - Chelsea and Mia were also on hand for the festivities.

I'm heading home tomorrow to sunny England. Rock 'n Roll Johnny B is heading with the Cowboys to Brokeback, Denver - home of the Cowboys or Broncos. We meet for a farewell drink in the bar. I had a pint of lager and he had something pink with an umbrella in it. He looks rather strange in his cowboy hat and spurs but oddly enough fits right in here. All friendly...

Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz Work the Crowd at AAC

The Dallas Morning News, TX
January 28, 2006

They're a generation apart, but Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz are perfect tour mates, since they draw from the exact same well of blues, funk and metal.

Mr. Kravitz, the opener Friday at a sold-out American Airlines Center, introduced his riff-heavy "Always on the Run" as "Steven Tyler's favorite song," and it was easy to hear why: It could have passed for an outtake from Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic.

Both acts owed a debt or three to the Beatles: Aerosmith opened its set with a rabid version of "Helter Skelter," while Mr. Kravitz closed his with the Lennon-esque "Let Love Rule."

And while Aerosmith's most recent big hit was the wimpy 1998 ballad "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," it focused on snarling blues Friday and followed "Thing" with a "Baby Please Don't Go," the ultimate case of saccharine followed by Tabasco. "Baby" made way for "Train Kept a Rollin'," with surprise guest Ted Nugent. As the Nuge and Joe Perry locked horns in a furious guitar-solo contest, it felt like a flashback from some long-gone Texxas Jam.

Mr. Perry – Keith Richards to Steven Tyler's Mick Jagger – grabbed the spotlight more often than usual, singing "Stop Messing Around" and "Shakin' My Cage," a blitzkrieg boogie from his new solo CD. He's not much of a singer, but he's still one of rock's saltiest guitarists – and not a bad theremin player either, judging from his solo in the middle of "Sweet Emotion" that threatened to break into "Whole Lotta Love" at any moment.

Still, the stage belonged to Mr. Tyler. At 57, he's not as acrobatic as he used to be (knee surgery will do that to you), but he's still a marvel, constantly twirling and hopping and galloping down a pair of stage wings that extended 25 rows across the main floor.

Mr. Kravitz spanned his career in a 65-minute set, starting with "Lady," his lyrically atrocious ode to Nicole Kidman, and ending with "Are You Gonna Go My Way." In between, he showed his knack for groovy singalongs ("Fly Away," "Dig In") while showing off his top-notch eight-piece band. Newcomer Trombone Shorty from New Orleans got huge applause, but the most valuable player was longtime guitarist Craig Ross, who lit into one jagged solo after the next.

Like a gracious guest, Mr. Kravitz lauded Aerosmith as "beautiful human beings ... and musically, so incredible." But like most opening acts, he didn't get to use his host's video screen or stage wings. He worked the joint into a frenzy anyway, jumping offstage in "Let Love Rule" and shaking hands and hugging fans like a politician on election day.

When you work a crowd as well as this guy does, who needs a stinkin' video screen?

Same Old Song and Dance For Rockers

Fort Worth Star-Telegram, TX
January 28, 2006

The American Airlines Center was packed to the rafters -- including seats sold behind the stage -- Friday night for Aerosmith and "co-headliner" Lenny Kravitz.

The show was originally sold as an "in-the-round" event, but try telling that to the folks who paid $150 a ticket to watch the band from the back.

Meanwhile, vendors trolled the floor as if at a sporting event, peddling $5 flashing pins and $12 disposable cameras.

Both acts were hawking dated CDs: Aerosmith's 2005 Rockin the Joint and Kravitz's '04 Baptism.

Kravitz brought along an eight-piece backup band, and Aerosmith had a fancy stage, with platforms and a plastic ramp that jutted out into the audience.

Otherwise, this was a bare-bones -- though entertaining -- rock show.

Aerosmith opened with an odd choice, a cover of the Beatles' Helter Skelter, with singer Steven Tyler hugging the microphone in oversized sunglasses and patchwork denim jeans, and guitarist Joe Perry in a black cowboy hat and matching duster.

The ensuing 90-minute set proved to be an obvious albeit satisfying parade of vintage cuts, from Walk This Way to Dream On to Back in the Saddle. Everyone on the planet has heard these songs (or seen the videos), but Aerosmith delivered them with crusty enthusiasm.

For anyone who owned the '74 release Get Your Wings, the high point of the concert was the band's rendition of Seasons of Wither, a beautiful if understated song distinguished by Perry's hypnotically chiming guitar.

Kravitz' set was a languid groove with lots of extended jams and what seemed to be vampy, though not unpleasant, filler. He padded Mama Said with an introduction of the band members. During Let Love Rule, Kravitz strolled through the arena shaking hands and lingering long enough for audience members to point their camera cellphones.

Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz

The Dallas Morning News, TX
January 27, 2006

Aerosmith debuted in 1973 and Lenny Kravitz not until '89, but stylistically, they're cut from the same tattered denim: Both rely on blues-based, riff-oriented, hook-laden rawk and roll. So it's no surprise to see they're now touring together. Aerosmith, which closes the show tonight, recently released Rockin' the Joint, a live album that shows the band still has plenty of snarl and swagger....

Diary - January 26

Flew with the band to a very cold Dallas. Shot Steven, who was resting his voice.

Kazuyo asked who the polite person was that I'd shot with Joe last night - it was Eric Johnson, who was so polite I'd forgotten I'd even taken a picture of him...

Going out for a sedate evening meal with John, in our cowboy hats - all friendly.

January 25

Went to bed earlyish - 12.30 - and still woke up at 7am... Meeting Rock 'n Roll John B for breakfast. A nice warm, sunny day. I hear it's nice in England - minus ten degrees...

Show tonight in San Antonio, I haven't been to a show here in... I honestly can't remember. I used to come here all the time in the '80s. I think it's maybe fifteen years.

Lenny Kravitz has cancelled, again - poor 'ole Len's feeling poorly. So Aerosmith add some songs - Kings And Queens, and an impromptu Think About It, plus Stop Messing (which I'm bored with, but the 'smiths love old Peter Green). Good to see them play stuff you don't expect. Did a good shoot with Joe Perry before he went on - he always looks cool... Joe wanted to do more when he came off all sweaty, but it took me ages to get through the crowd - by then he'd changed back to normal (whatever normal is). Rock 'n Roll John Bionelli insisted on taking a picture of me in Joe's hat. He must want it for his hotel room wall, next to Donny Shiteman - all friendly on the range....

January 24

Arrive at 3am. Can't sleep. As I'm jet-lagged, I am awake at 9am. Go out with a friend of mine, Spencer, record shopping. I'm too tired to enjoy it. Corner Steven at 5pm and make him go through photos - he's actually quite good, he knows what he likes....

January 23

Off to Houston. Why is it the only flights I can get on are at dawn? Arrive into Houston at midday. It is overcast and cold - every time I come here is the same. Boring day, hanging out at the show. At least the Aerosmith crew are all nice. The band arrive at around 6.30. Mainly shoot Steven backstage. Rock'n Roll John Bionelli insists on doing pictures with me, holding a red rose in his mouth. I'll get them up soon - all friendly. Don't enjoy the show, the audience are aggressive and drunk. There is nothing less fun than a sad, middle-aged drunk. Kazuyo, my assistant, is politely asking people to move out of the way and is told "Go f*ck yourself". Nice manners - in the south... Fly to San Antonio after the show with the band....

Aerosmith Brings Rock 'N' Roll Drama to AT&T Center

San Antonio Express News, TX
January 26, 2006

Steven Tyler and Aerosmith perform Wednesday night at the AT&T Center.
Bahram Mark Sobhani/Express-News

Same old song and dance? Who cares?

This is Aerosmith after all, the American version of the Rolling Stones that continues to gather no moss since rolling out of Boston in the early '70s.

We still love that dirty water served up by the much cleaned up band led by singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, as evidenced at a nearly sold out show at AT&T Center on Wednesday.

About the only down side was co-headliner Lenny Kravitz's no-show due to illness – or at least that was the official reason given.

Some fans, like attorney Chance McGhee, weren't too pleased.

“I'm bummed,” McGhee said. He spent $425 on tickets for himself and his wife.

“My wife and I love Lenny Kravitz – we were thinking Aerosmith was a bonus.” The San Antonio lawyer expressed his doubts about the reason for Kravitz's cancellation announced late Wednesday.

“I think Kravitz is hung over or got into a fight with Aerosmith,” McGhee, 39, said.

Local heroes Sexto Sol filled in admirably, doing their Santana thing that earned a shout out from Tyler.

Rock 'n' roll drama was alive and well this night — so was the fun.

“There's some crazy (expletive) in here,” Tyler said at one point. Moments later, an overheated female fan climbed onto the catwalk to get close to the bad-boy sex symbol (and prove his point). It was one of several instances of security lapses that led to grope 'n' roll.

Other highlights: Tom Hamilton's bass rumbling on cue for the famous intro to “Sweet Emotion.” The song captures the attention across generations.

And they were represented here — with fathers with backward baseball caps accompanying their young children, teenagers snapping photos with their cell phones and gray-headed dinosaurs grooving along to the beat – some motorcycle mamas, too.

Aerosmith opened its concert with the Beatles' “Helter Skelter,” Paul McCartney's infamous ode to a children's playground slide. The frenzied attitude of that distorted E-chord barrage prevailed throughout the show.

For his part, Perry played the man-in-black foil to Tyler's gypsy persona, especially with the on-fire “Baby Please Don't Go” and his own slide guitar blues spotlight.

“Livin' On the Edge” best personifies this band's attitude and ability to survive and call it like it is: “Something's wrong with the world today and everybody knows it's (expletive),” Tyler sang, messing with the verse. But as long as Tyler's still able to miraculously scream those high notes with the only enormous mouth that rivals Mick Jagger's, things ain't so bad. Walk this way, indeed.

Aerosmith, Kravitz Relive The Past

Houston Chronicle, TX
January 24, 2006

Successful rock 'n' roll bands catch fire with a hit single or album early on and then spend the rest of their time chasing that success. Career rock 'n' roll bands are clever enough to realize that longevity lies in a fine balance between commitment to evolution and loyalty to past glories.

This was the Rock 101 lesson on display during the Lenny Kravitz-Aerosmith co-headlining set that took over a sold out Toyota Center Monday night. In 90 minutes it became evident why Aerosmith was able to emerge from the Rolling Stones' shadow and become one of America's greatest blues-rock outfits.

On the flip side, Houston saw the talented Kravitz battle himself and continue to be little more than a Jimi Hendrix knock-off.

These days a rock superstar's ego is measured by the size of its stage. Aerosmith was not about to be outdone by the the mini-skyscraper and jet-ready runways that the Rolling Stones and U2 packed onto the Toyota Center floor. The band's stage was a mix of both with a main deck that extended the width of the building, a two-story wall of LED-screens and strutting platforms for singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry that extended more than halfway into the floor seating.

Tyler and Co. spent the bulk of their 17-song set banging out the 12-bar based blues-rooted rock 'n' roll that was its trademark for the first half of its career before a mid-80s pop-rock makeover. The set highlight, however, was a pure Brit-rock masterpiece they stole from fellow legends, the Beatles.

In a pair of black-n-white striped pants that seemed borrowed from Quiet Riot's Kevin Dubrow, Tyler sang the Fab Four's Helter Skelter in a tortured howl that McCartney, Bono or any other past comers couldn't rival.

Aerosmith could have gotten away with a set of nothing but songs from its '70s beginnings and nearly did. Walk This Way, Same Old Song and Dance, Sweet Emotion and Dream On were played with a renewed adoration from the originators who took them for granted in the past. The nostalgic stream was only briefly interrupted for a leap forward in time to pop ballads Cryin' and What It Takes.

Tyler ventured into the middle of the floor during What It Takes and was pawed at by the masses. The sneaky frontman took the weakest link in the set list and made it one of the most memorable.

Kravitz is in dire need of some of Tyler's mojo. His voice was constricted from a bout with the flu, and his 11 songs seemed to be a drowsy dollop of NyQuil for everyone else. He gave piecemeal support to his latest album, 2004's Baptism, with competent renditions of the forgettable neo-soul of California and Lady.

By the time he got to the hits he'd already lost the crowd to the beer lines. His ace-in-the-hole, debut single Let Love Rule, was extended to a monotonous 20 minute jam and a cover of American Woman begged the question, "Why bother?" Kravitz entire career plays like a cover of American Woman.

Aerosmith Joined By Cheap Trick Singer Onstage

Blabbermouth.net, NY
January 24, 2006

Launch Radio Networks reports: Aerosmith gave the fans in Tampa, Florida, last week a special treat when they brought Cheap Trick's Robin Zander onstage. Zander joined Aerosmith on a cover version of The Beatles classic "Come Together", and he traded vocals with both Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Thanks to modern technology, a fan was able to capture the performance, and the video is now online. To check it out, just go to YouTube.com and search for "Zander."

Aerosmith first recorded "Come Together" in 1978 for the film "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", in which they played the Future Villain Band. The song also came out that year on Aerosmith's "Live Bootleg" album.

Aerosmith and Cheap Trick are old friends, and they did a joint tour in 2004.

The next stop for Aerosmith is Wednesday night (January 25) at the SBC Center in San Antonio....

Aerosmith's Hard-Knock Rock

San Antonio Express, TX
January 19, 2006

It has been 19 years since he was drooling drunk, but Joe Perry still confesses a weakness for the sauce.

Calling from a tour stop in North Carolina, Aerosmith's chiseled-cheek, boogie-riff guitar hero is joking about his namesake brand of Rock Your World hot sauces. These days, the lean and clean 55-year-old rocker is more likely to slather his ribs than pickle his liver.

"Yeah, definitely," he says with a laugh. "I'll eat all the hot sauce I want, because it doesn't stop me from playing onstage (laughs). I've always gravitated toward (cooking), and I figured if I'm going to eat, I'm going to eat well. I've had my share of Burger King in the early days, but I can remember having these big cookouts at my parents' place and always making sure the steaks and hamburgers were just right.

"It must be my Mediterranean blood. I'm half Italian and half Portuguese and only one generation from the Old Country, so I'm sure that's a big part of it. The one thing I kind of get upset about though is when people bring their bottles (of hot sauce) for me to sign and they're still full."

Draining bottles is something Aerosmith did with death-defying frequency throughout the 1970s. More motley than Crüe, more toxic than Poison and packing more guns than roses, this Boston-baked train wreck set a staggering standard for bloodshot blackouts and coke-caked excess.

Done with smoke and mirrors, Perry lines up 30 years' worth of Aerosmith hits at the AT&T Center on Wednesday when he is joined by monkey-man vocalist Steven Tyler, co-guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer. Expect surprise rarities along with "Walk This Way," "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion."

Aerosmith is peddling its latest dual disc, "Rockin' The Joint — Live at the Hard Rock Hotel," which offers video and audio of an intimate 2002 Las Vegas performance in front of 3,000 lucky fans. The performance includes the long-lost gems "Seasons of Wither" and "No More, No More" alongside an old-school cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Rattlesnake Shake" and the first-ever live recording of the No.1 smash, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

For his part, Perry is pushing his self-titled fourth solo album, which features a locked-tight cover of the Doors' "The Crystal Ship" along with Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man" and a host of original, blues-marinated shuffles, including the Grammy-nominated instrumental track, "Mercy."

The nomination "really hit me from the side," Perry says. "I've been living with that song for so long. It's one of those riffs I've wrung inside and out. I think I first laid it down 10 years ago as a potential song for Aerosmith. We tried rearranging it every which way in order to put vocals on it, and as it happens so often, sometimes the riffs are so strong on their own it's hard to find space for vocals."

By the late 1970s, Perry had a hard time finding space for the unholy madness consuming Aerosmith. A bona fide, stadium-sized monstrosity, Aerosmith was riding the rails to legend thanks to the smash success of the 1975 masterpiece album, "Toys in the Attic" and the subsequent releases, "Rocks," "Draw the Line" and the lesser-liked, 1979 death-knell, "Night in the Ruts."

Inevitably, Perry quit the band in a blinding black cloud of threatening violence, shouting and snorting. Whitford soon followed, leaving the respective parties to struggle for sanity and commercial viability.

"We'd been busting our asses making Aerosmith into what it was for 10 years, and we'd never really taken time off to clear our heads," Perry says. "The machine was bigger than us, and we should have just taken a year off.

"Instead, it blew up and we melted. There were some times when I'd get back to Boston after being on the road and my first marriage had broken up, where I'd move into one of those places where you pay $25 a week to live. It wasn't quite a homeless shelter, but it was a pretty hand-to-mouth existence. It was a really hard time leaving the shelter of Aerosmith, but I was gonna make my own way one way or another. It was a good lesson."

Another good lesson came in the shapely form of one Billie Paulette, a model whom Perry met during the video shoot for his 1983 song "Black Velvet Pants." Together, the couple steered toward sobriety and is today pushing 23 years of married bliss. Upon their meeting, Billie figured Perry was a long-haired, moonlighting rocker dude and had no idea he was adored by zillions of Aerosmith fans.

"That's true," Perry recalls. "It didn't really sink in. She just paid it lip service and said, 'yeah, yeah, yeah.' Then she realized we had songs on the radio, and I think she was going through some of my old stuff and found boxes of old magazine clippings and stuff. She realized that we were indeed a stadium act."

Enshrined in 2001 in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and having sold more than 100 million albums, the all-original brotherhood of Aerosmith is today richer in more ways than money. Asked if Aerosmith will get back to the swaggering, innuendo-driven songwriting genius of Tyler and Perry minus the outside hit makers, the guitarist hints at hope.

"That's what we've been talking about doing for the next record, but it's hard to set rules," Perry says. Begged further on behalf of hard-core fans, a humble Perry gives some ground.

"It's nice to hear that," he says of the gushing. "If you can put that down in writing and I can hand it out to the boys, we might have something."
