Rock 'N' Roll At Home

MSNBC.com
June 27, 2005

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry doesn't have to go far to find inspiration for his latest solo CD

When Rolling Stone reviewed Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry's new solo CD, they gave it three and a half out of four stars and said, "He's just a guitar freak doing his thing in the basement studio." “Today” entertainment reporter Jill Rappaport got a chance to visit Perry in that studio at his home, right outside of Boston.

At one time he was quite "the wild child," but rock 'n' roll legend Joe Perry leads a very different life offstage. For more than three decades, Joe Perry has electrified fans as the lead guitarist for Aerosmith, one of the biggest bands in rock 'n' roll history. But when he's not turning up the heat with scorching hot guitar riffs, you'll find him far from the roller-coaster world of rock 'n' roll. Hidden in the suburbs of Boston sits this rustic estate Perry shares with his wife Billie, their children, and two beautiful Friesian horses.

But make no mistake about it. This suburban family man is still a rock 'n' roller at heart. With Aerosmith on a break, Perry has kept busy working in his home studio, completing his solo CD, simply called, "Joe Perry."

Joe Perry: This is really the first true solo record that I’ve ever done, where I actually wrote all the music, wrote all the lyrics, played everything on it except the drums.

Jill Rappaport: This album really is from the heart, from your soul. Would you say that this album will really give your fans insight to who you really are?

Perry: Well, I would have to — it's just like tearing a page from my musical journal.

Rappaport: And how about singing alone. I mean, you're used to having Steven right there with you.

Perry: Yeah, well, it was, again, that was a stretch of faith. I'm more of a stylist than a singer.

Rappaport: The majority of the songs are love songs. Who would have thought that this hard-nosed rock 'n' roller was really a romantic at heart?

Perry: I am a romantic at heart. And I am in love and — it's just a natural path to go on.

Rappaport: I know it was Billie who really prompted you to get down here and really sing and say what you feel.

Perry: Yeah, well, she really — she's been my muse ever since I met her.

Rappaport: Billie, he said you are his muse. You are the inspiration. And it was really you who prodded him to do this album.

Billie Perry: Well, I think that he really felt like he needed to express himself, and this is his fourth solo record.

One number close to their heart is 20. That's how many years they've been married. And for the last 17, the idyllic setting of their home has been their sanctuary.

Joe Perry's passion for music is prominently displayed everywhere on the nine-acre property, Right down to the most unusual places. After all, what’s a rock star’s home without its own bus? And what a tour bus it is.

Now, 30 years after the journey with Aerosmith began, Joe Perry has definitely found his true voice. And he's hoping fans will appreciate it.

Rappaport: When it's just you, Joe, with your name, from the heart. A lot of pressure there, right, buddy?

Perry: On an Aerosmith record, that's one advantage to being with a band like that. So you can always blame it on somebody else. You know?

Rappaport: Who are you going to blame now?

Perry: That option — I have nothing, nothing like that.

Solo record aside, Joe Perry is now gearing up for a big fall tour with the boys in Aerosmith.

JOE Perry – Joe Perry
by Clifford “Junior” Newsted

Cover: 8 Guitarists Gone Solo out of 10

The simplicity of the cover shot of Joe rockin’ out is just so cool. Joe standing in a red background with Joe Perry written above the shot of ½ of the “Toxic Twins.” No frills --just Joe selling you a solo release. Less can be more.

Booklet: 7 Bone Yards out of 10

The booklet features several shots of Mr. Perry, taken by one of the best rock n roll photographers – Ross Haflin. It opens up and has four panels. It’s got the words “Joe Perry” extended throughout the booklet in glossy lettering on the paper’s matte finish. Very cool looking. Unfortunately there are no lyrics, which is the only downside of this booklet. All the other stuff you’d expect is in there.

Songs: 8 “Honkers” on Bobo out of 10

As stated in the DVD portion of this dual disc, by Joe himself. He’s not a singer, he’s a guitarist first. Don’t expect Joe’s singing to be compared with Steven Tyler’s. He doesn’t give him a run for his money. Joe is a better singer than his contemporaries though, better than Keith Richards, better than Joe Walsh, better than Satriani and definitely better than Ronnie Wood. Enough said in the vocal department. Joe has mixed it up quite a bit on this record. You’ll hear a variety of tracks and while they aren’t in the vein of “Aerosupply,” they don’t stray too far from what you think he’d deliver on a solo outing. Personally, the best track on the record is the opener “Shakin’ My Cage,” a crunchy, contemporary boogie track, “Can’t Compare” is a mellower track, it’s catchy and probably the track that best showcases Joe’s pipes, “Push Comes to Shove” is another favorite of mine, again Joe shows off what he has going on vocally, two tracks that I can’t go without mentioning are the instrumentals “Twilight” and “Mercy” Joe throws the rule book out the window and truly shines on both of these numbers!

Comments: Maybe 13 tracks is a tad too many. 10 would have done the job just as well. The dual disc version offers the most bang for your buck, featuring a informative documentary on the making of “Joe Perry.” You can play the entire record on your DVD player and hear it in 5.1! In addition to that, you can also play around with mixes of a number of tracks using the “Umixit” program that is in the DVD portion of this release. Listen, Joe isn’t the best singer, but he is one hell of guitarist and songwriter, and this solo record demands to be heard. I, for one, would love to hear what he has up his sleeve for the next one. Lord knows this has more punch than the last two Aerosmith records combined.

Steven and Joe formed Aerosmith and soon after Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer joined the band and they headed for Boston. They were scooped up by Columbia Records and in '73 they released their first record.

Aerosmith has rocked every generation. They left their mark in the 70's with Toys in the Attic, Walk This Way and Sweet Emotion, jammed the 80's with Janie's Got a Gun and Love in an Elevator and owned the 90's with Get a Grip, which included the singles Cryin', Crazy and Amazing. Rumor Alert! Def Leppard?

Thanks to tony for this, but again it's just rumors, nothing is set in stone (yet)

Good morning all...

I had a very rare opportunity last evening of spending a fairly significant amount of time with Jim Koplik, the primary concert promoter here in CT for the past 30 years...

Jim was very engaging and personable, and the topics of conversation were varied... Naturally, the subject of Aerosmith came up...

I asked Jim if there was any new information that he would be willing to share with me. He once again, confirmed that he is holding an October 6th date at the Meadows Music Theater in Hartford, CT. I then asked Jim if this would double as the tour opener, and he couldn't confirm that, one way or the other...

After that, I had to address the Van Halen rumor issue. It was only a few weeks ago that I learned that the VH rumor was still alive.... I believe Jim may have finally put that rumor to sleep last evening...

As the story goes, it was very unfortunate that Eddie had to re-enter rehab after the most recent VH tour... As a result, Sammy has refused to go back on the road, or do any work with Van Halen, unless Eddie gets himself clean and sober... For these reasons, Jim said the Aerosmith / VH tour rumor should be put to bed...

I then asked him about Plan B... Who did he think Aerosmith would tour with this year..? What Jim said was that Def Leppard has an upcoming date at the Mohegan Sun on June 27th. He is scheduled to sit down with Def Leppard and their management, and is proposing to them, a package deal with Aerosmith...

It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out... I certainly run the risk of looking like a horse's ass, if none of this materializes, but having received this information from the horse's mouth, I figured it would be worth taking that risk...

I do want to caution everyone though. Please do not make travel plans regarding this date / venue, until there is an official announcement by either Aerosmith, their management, or AF1... It's certainly not uncommon in this business to have dates change, etc... Even though this is the best information I have at this time, all it really is, is "preliminary" information...four months in advance...

As always, I'll do my best to provide you with future updates, and I'll only post information from public / identified sources...

Have a good day everyone...

Tony - MPC1

A Rose by Liv Tyler's Name

USA Today
June 23, 2005

Life couldn't be rosier for Liv Tyler. As the face of the French cosmetics and fragrance line Givenchy, the actress and new mom just had a rose named after her. The flower, officially dubbed the Liv Tyler Rose, is one of the components of the new Very Irresistible Givenchy Sensual Eau de Parfum, which Tyler introduced at an event last week and which will be available at Macy's this August.

Yes, Tyler acknowledges being just a wee bit overwhelmed by the blossoming honor. "It's this big, beautiful pink rose," she says. "Maybe I can get them to give me a bush so I can plant it in my garden." Tyler, 27, shares that downtown Manhattan garden with her musician husband, Royston Langdon, 33, and their son, Milo, 6 months. So besotted is Tyler with her child that she puts him on the phone to say hello while cooing to him that she's busy doing an interview. "I must say, he's quite the looker," the proud mom says. "We waited to know if he was a boy or a girl because we wanted to be surprised. He came out and was so amazing and perfect and beautiful."

In his looks, Tyler says, Milo carries on her famous pouty family legacy, which she shares with her dad, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. "He has big lips," she says. "He has blue eyes like I do and blond hair like Roy. Giant hands and feet, like me....

Sweet promotion

By Brian Goslow

Aerosmith has always been a band of the people. Even in their days (and nights) of wild excesses, band members could be found shopping at the Coop in Harvard Square or checking out a new group at The Rat or The Paradise. That common-man attitude served them well in their late 1980s comeback. It also made last year’s crashing of its Aero Force One fan club, then operated by the Lowell-based FansRule Inc., a stunning act of betrayal for longtime fans, some of whom were left holding tickets for cancelled appearances with no way of getting refunds from the bankrupt company.

In stepped Paid Inc. Celebrity Services, a Worcester-based company that also creates e-commerce software and is an online auction collectibles seller with its origins in Rotmans Collectibles.

Aero Force One shares space with Rotmans Furniture. It’s where fan club merchandise and packages are prepared and shipped by their 25 or so employees; a second office is situated in the John Hancock Tower in Boston. Many of Paid Inc’s celebrities are sports stars, including local boxing hero Jose Antonio Rivera, members of the three-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots, and Hockey Hall of Famers Ray Bourque and Cam Neely.

For now, the jury — the longtime fans of Aerosmith who’ve seen their fan club taken over by three different companies in recent years — is still deliberating on Paid Inc.’s long-range staying power. “It is much too early to determine if Paid has improved the fan club,” e-mails Terry, coordinator for the “Don’t Miss an Aero Thing” Yahoo newsgroup, which she calls the largest Aerosmith newsgroup on the Internet. Like many message board participants, she chooses not to reveal her last name or location due to past flaming wars. “[It’s] not too hard to “improve” on how FansRule handled things since they were a complete disaster from Day One which some of us tried to convey to management and the band. But it was not until they went bankrupt that a change was made.”

“The new club really has not done much at all yet,” e-mails David Booth, who runs Aerosmithfans.com from his Richmond, Virginia, base. “Membership prices went up and they had a trip to Boston merely to do some Aerosmith sightseeing, which cost well over $1,000, not including air fare.” That would be last month’s “Behind the Aerosmith Door” tour of the group’s area haunts, that included Longview Farms Studios in Brookfield.

However, Carol Croswell of North Reading, a member of both Aero Force One and the Yahoo Aerosmith group and a fan since 1984, attended last month’s event. “My son and I were treated like royalty during a tour of the Zildjian Cymbal factory, where we met [Aerosmith drummer] Joey Kramer,” she e-mails. “[It’s} An experience that will stay with my son for a long time. He is 11 and said it was the best day of his life.”

The big test for Paid Inc. will come when it has to handle advanced sales for fan club members for the expected Aerosmith tour this fall. “There are still many fans left holding worthless tickets from when the prior club went bankrupt and the new fan club continually dodges any questions about that situation,” Aerosmithfans.com’s Booth says. “That matter is before the bankruptcy courts,” Paid Inc. Vice President Kristen Kuliga responds. “We are being as supportive as we can to do whatever we can to help that process along.”

U2 received plenty of negative publicity when paid-up members weren’t able to snag tickets at the start of their current tour. To avoid creative ticket scalpers from using Aero Force One to snag tickets, Paid Inc. has a policy that anyone found to have more than one membership will have all of them cancelled and access to ticket offers cut off. How they deliver on that promise will play a key role in their longtime relationship.

“If Paid Inc. wants to impress jaded — pardon the pun — Aerosmith fans, their first order of business should be to insist that that band and management ensure priority seating to long-time fans who have proved their loyalty time and time again,” e-mails Debi, a fan of the band since 1975. “We don’t expect the band to serve us hors d’oeuvres on a silver platter, but a little nod to longtime fans without picking our pockets would be nice. How about preferred seating in the first third of the venue for fan club members?”

Another DMAT-Yahoo member, Dawn Tuozzolo of Norwalk, Conn., a member of Aero Force One since 1997 whose has attended 22 Aerosmith shows since 1978, is confident, based on her early dealings with Paid Inc. that they’ll deliver on their promise. “Right away, they made good on getting out our new membership packages and they let members who had left the old fan club come back and keep their seniority,” she says in an e-mail.

Paid Inc. is also working with the remaining members of The Cars, whose bass player and vocalist Ben Orr died in 2000. According to Axl Music, who sponsor Cars guitarist Elliot Easton, the remaining Cars have been in the studio working on a new record that will reportedly be followed by a tour. “At this time we don’t have any knowledge or confirmation of that,” says Kuliga. “Right now, we’ve just been brought on to create a Web site for The Cars to give a place for fans that were fans years ago to come and congregate. I’ve received several e-mails from fans looking forward to having something interactive so that they can feel close to The Cars again.”

In this day and age, almost everyone can be a celebrity overnight. In anticipation of the debut of “The Real Gilligan’s Island” on TBS on June 8, Mary Ann (Mandy Weaver) and Gilligan (Shawn Manning) asked Paid Inc. to create Web sites for them prior to the show’s debut. Whether it has a short shelf life or turns out to have a long run, the duo want to make sure they’re ready to take advantage of any marketing opportunities it provides. Paid Inc. secured them a Snapple commercial and they’ve already begun making promotional appearances throughout the country.

The bottom line is that the power of celebrity seems to trump everything else in the public spotlight. “It does seem to be it’s getting more and more that way,” Kulega says. “Our job is to market the positive element of celebrity, of being a good person on and off the field and that people will like that part of celebrity and embrace them.”

Dear Crazy Blue Army Members!

Want to be on TV?

Got this from Jessica who works in the U.K. for a TV show. They are planning on doing a show about fanatics/groupies/bandies. Here are the 2 e-mails I received with the info:

I am compiling a list of the ultimate (music) groupies of all time
from 70s to now for a possible TV show for British channel- C4.
I am a bit stuck actually as so many stories
are myths and so many ultimate fans/groupies are un-named.
I'm wondering if you have any ideas yourself of any Aerosmith
groupies/groupie tales/ultimate fans or of any contacts of
yours that might be able to help us as the research so far is
really general and we need to get more specific.

We need names of groupies/ultimate fans as I would like to
start to approach people to discuss featuring in our
documentary.
I would really appreciate any ideas you have.
Sorry if this all sounds quite random and out of the blue!
Many thanks
Jessica

Hi
Thanks so much for your help in this this is so nice of you!
I would love to talk to fans/groupies who are willing to share a few naughty secrets (nothing that would not be part of Aerosmith’s rock n’ roll image anyway- but nothing extreme that could get them in trouble!) from absolutely anywhere and everywhere.
I really look forward to hearing from people and thank you so much again for your help in this.
Kind regards
Jessica

Do you fit into that category? If so e-mail her @ jessica.harling@atitproductions.com

4. Rocks - Aerosmith: One of the first records I ever bought. If you look at the sound levels compared to records that came out before this one, this one is when things suddenly started to get loud. Rock song writing at it's best.

Legendary Aerosmith Guitarist Joe Perry Ready to Rock Fancy Foods Show in New York with Signature Hot Sauces

PR Newswire via Yahoo! Finance - Press Release
June 20, 2005

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Coming to Big Apple to Promote His 'Rock Your World Boneyard Brew' Hot Sauce at NASFT Fancy Foods Show at Javits Center, July 10-12
New Solo Album in Stores Now

Guitar legend and Aerosmith founding member Joe Perry has found a new way to 'rock your world' ... with a pair of signature hot sauces.
Perry -- whose new solo album, Joe Perry, is in stores now -- will join the rest of the Rock Your World crew in attendance at the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade's (NASFT) Fancy Foods Show July 10-12 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. Both Joe's signature sauces -- "Rock Your World Boneyard Brew" and "Rock Your World Mango-Peach Tango" hot sauce -- are being considered for food awards, which will be announced at the show.

A longtime fan of spicy food, Perry grew tired of concocting his own sauce by blending different commercial hot sauces to create the right balance of flavor and heat. Four years ago, he contacted Ashley Foods -- a Boston-based food company -- about formulating his own hot sauce. A year later, Perry unleashed the Rock Your World Boneyard Brew, an all-natural mix of fresh habanero peppers, onions, garlic, lime juice, red bell peppers, chipotle peppers and aged red wine vinegar.

Taking its name from The Boneyard -- Joe's basement home studio -- the sauce uses the freshest ingredients possible and contains no preservatives. "I like a sauce that adds some heat but doesn't overwhelm the food," Perry explains. "There are plenty of sauces out there that will blow your brains out; I wasn't interested in that. I wanted to create an everyday sauce with no preservatives for people who want to add a little zest to their food."

Far from a celebrity-endorsed product, Perry was deeply involved in each step of product development from the taste to the packaging. "The bottom line is that I won't put my name on anything -- from a Les Paul guitar to a hot sauce -- that I don't personally use."

It was Perry's grandfather who first turned him on to fiery flavors. "My grandfather's doctors told him he couldn't have spicy food anymore, so he had a secret stash of hot pepper that he used to share with me," Perry recalls. "When I started traveling a lot 25 years ago, I was exposed to a wide range of cuisines and fell in love food that packs a kick."

Last year, Perry introduced the Rock Your World Mango-Peach Tango hot sauce, a flavorful mix of habanero peppers, mangos, peaches onions, garlic, lime juice, red bell peppers and aged red wine vinegar. The tropical twist, Perry says, was inspired by his trips to the Caribbean and the bottles of Matouk hot sauce he saw on every restaurant table. "The tangy taste of fresh mangos and the bite of habaneros complement each other for an intense sweet heat," Perry explains.

Hard Rock Cafe currently serves Rock Your World Mango-Peach Tango with its quesadillas and uses it for the Mighty Mango Mary, a twisted take on the classic Bloody Mary. Part of the fun, Perry says, is hearing about the new ways people use his sauce. "I never would have thought to use the sauce in a drink like that. It's strange, but it's like writing a song. Once you put it out there, people will interpret it different ways. Instead of telling me stories about my songs, now people are telling me their Rock Your World recipes."

Two years ago Aaron Hirsch -- Joe's son and the company's CEO -- began raising the company's profile through an aggressive marketing and advertising campaign along with the expansion of the Web site http://www.joeperrysrockyourworld.com, which includes t-shirts, recipes and limited-edition, signed bottles of hot sauce. "Right now we are developing other products by putting our unique twist on the kinds of snacks you would find in the pantry on the Aerosmith tour bus," he says. "We are also exploring ways to donate a portion of the company's profits to a charitable organization."

Rumors of celebrity sightings run amok

Fayetteville Online, NC
June 19, 2005

When hordes of the rich are in town, it follows that some of the famous may be, too. So, while some people favored golf at the U.S. Open this week, others were more interested in celebrity "sightings."....There was some truth, however, in a few sightings. Employees at the Fresh Market did see Woods' wife shopping there, one employee said. And Courtney Ham, a hostess at the Bonefish Grill off U.S. 15-501 in Southern Pines, said that yes, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Mark "Marky Mark" Wahlberg, ate dinner at the restaurant. "I shook Steven Tyler's hand," she said. Their meal was about a month ago, however - not last week. The singers' party of about 12 included the Forest Creek golf pro, Ham said, who may have been giving them lessons. The stars were friendly and took pictures and signed autographs. "There was a bunch of teeny-boppers in here calling people and taking pictures with their cell phones," Ham said.

Joe Perry To Judge At Next Year's IMA's

Richmond.com, VA
June 17, 2005

Modern Groove Syndicate was named "Best Jazz Band" in the 2005 Independent Music Awards... That the IMAs can consistently bring in such big talent to judge the final round of the contest – next year's judges include Melissa Etheridge, Aerosmith's Joe Perry, George Clinton and Nickel Creek's Chris Thile - attests to the significance of this relatively new competition. The Music Resource Group, which produces the Musicians Atlas, a go-to sourcebook for active musicians, started the Independent Music Awards in 2000....

Ready for Major League Experience?

AtlantaBraves.com, GA
June 16, 2005

Take the chance to live out your big-league dreams

Right now, there are 750 people who enjoy it on a daily basis, living out their dreams on 30 big-league baseball fields. Now there is an opportunity for you to really see what it feels like to play in actual Major League stadiums...to live the life of a Major Leaguer....

"There are people whose lives are all about responsibilities," said Tom Hamilton, the bassist for Aerosmith and an investor partner in the Major League Experience. "That's really what all of our lives are like. But you get to a point where you need to acknowledge this and do something about it for yourself. In your daily life, if you said, 'I'm going to take part of my day and go focus on baseball,' people would get really mad at you -- it would look like you're not working. But it's time to pay respect to that part of yourself and have a really great time with something like this.

"I talked to a lot of people who would say, 'Oh, I used to play guitar in college and never made it.' They put the guitar away for some reason and never play it. This is an idea for people to get reacquainted with the idea that they really love it. ... The idea of being on tour with 100 or 120 other people who feel the same way as you, flying together on jets set up exclusively on tour, it's really great. When we travel, we charter a small jet that's big enough just for the band and a few people. You don't go through the parking garage where the rest of the cattle are going. You get there and you're on your new plane with all these people who love what you're loving, and you fly off to a new destination."

...Signups are being accepted now. Send e-mail (to: mlbexperience@mlb.com) with your contact information if you are interested in the Major League Experience of a lifetime.

Tom's Got The Reel Blues

Aero Force One
June 14, 2005

"I had a great experience a couple of weekends ago. A friend of ours named James Montgomery is a gifted practitioner of the Blues. He's been a friend of ours since we first moved to Boston and set up the band. When we weren't too busy rehearsing and writing, his band was one of the few in Boston we would go out to see. Eventually we did a few gigs together which was cool because he was already established on the local scene.

These days he's nationally known as one of the finest Blues Harp player's around. He started an organization recently that helps blues musicians who don't have health insurance.

A few months ago he and I played at an event for a charity called 'Peace Games' which is an organization that's involved in teaching kids how to resolve issues without using violence. While we were there he asked if I would come to an event he was putting on to raise money for the Reel Blues Fest (a 501(C)(3) – a non-profit that provides musicians and first time film makers with medical care).

It was held at an awesome place on Cape Cod right on the ocean. There's a huge inn there that had a room big enough for a stage and about three hundred people. James and his hotter than hot band played a bunch of cookin' blues songs and then announced the night's special guest, James Cotton. That name alone will stop any knowledgeable blues fan in his tracks. This guy is a true legend who was a star back in the era that was so influential in the formation of rock music. When heavy hitters from Britain like the Yardbirds, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Ten Years After would talk about their influences he was part of the discussion. He's well known for being closely associated musically with Muddy Waters who was another of the elite grandfathers of Rock and Roll.

James introduced him and he hit the stage. In a few seconds the band was cookin' again and James and Muddy were trading eerie bellowing harp riffs that chilled the soul. After a few songs James announced that he wanted to give me an award to receive on the band's behalf thanking us for helping out when they were getting the organization started. I was pretty nervous. James' bass player, an old friend of ours who totally kicks ass lent me his bass so I could come up and join in. I forget the name of the song we played but it was based on the old 'Green Onion' riff that everybody knows. We got it movin' and I started to relax and jam around a bit. Right after playing a weird little lick up high near the twelfth fret James Cotton turned around and looked at me with this big smile on his face. I hope it was an appreciation smile and not a 'what the hell did you just play?' smile.

Anyway I can now add the experience to my collection.

After that a singer went on named Shamika Copeland who is the daughter of the late Johnny Clyde Copeland. I remember seeing him and his band play at the house of Blues in Cambridge and being absolutely floored. It definitely rubbed off on Shamika because she can sing her ass off to put it plainly. She's gifted musically as is her whole band. The bass player had awesome tone and was totally locked with the relentless snap of the drummer. They had a keyboard player whose fingers were soulful and sparse one minute and a blur the next as he alternated between electric piano and Hammond B3 - (a real one as opposed to a synth.) The guitar player's hands r
