Steven, Liv And Hubby At U2 Show

LovelyLivTyler.com
May 30, 2005

Liv, husband Roy and dad Steven apparently went to a U2 concert and the party that followed. From Boston Herald:

An eclectic group of U2 groupies - including actress Liv Tyler, Super Bowl champs Tom Brady and Larry Izzo and Boston City Council prez Michael Flaherty - partied into the wee hours yesterday at News with the Irish rockers and their crew after the band's second sold-out show.
[ ... ]
Some 130 roadies, members of opening act, Kings of Leon, and special pals, such as Tyler and her Spacehog hubby, Royston Langdon, were on the 100-plus guest list.
[ ... ]
Anyway, we hear Bono spent the night huddled in corners chatting up Liv and Roy and others while Brady and Flaherty talked politics and sports over bottles of Saratoga Springs water at the bar.

From Boston.com:

Among those enjoying U2's Thursday night show at the FleetCenter were Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, his daughter Liv Tyler, Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton, and former vice president Al Gore

Excerpt - Ross Halfin's Diary

May 27, 2005

It is sooooooooooo hot today. I have to drive to Wales to shoot Black Sabbath. It takes four hours in no traffic. Can't remember the last time I crossed the border. The new Severn bridge is impressive. Phil Alexander is filming some TV special, he left London at 6am - sensible man.

My friend Wilf is the tour manager, talking into a hands-free phone, walking around the garden. 'He's just come out of the loony bin,' says Ozzy. Rock 'n roll John Bionelli is Wilf's assistant, looking after the band and panicking over the set list.

Membership has its privileges

The Boston Globe, MA

Members of Aerosmith's fan club, Aero Force One, got a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Boston band this week. The three-day package, for which Aerosmith acolytes paid up to $1,000, included a trip to the Zildjian factory with drummer Joey Kramer, dinner at the Mount Blue Restaurant -- owned, not coincidentally, by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry -- and a day at the Longview Farm Recording Studios in North Brookfield, where Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and Motley Crue have all recorded.

Unoffical date October 6th

Thanks to Tony @ af1

**UNOFFICIAL UPDATE**

AEROSMITH: OCTOBER 6TH, AT THE MEADOWS IN HARTFORD

This is as close to a confirmation as I am going to get, until the official dates are released... This date is subject to change, but this is the date that Jim Koplik has reserved for Aerosmith in Hartford...

As confident as I am of this information, I really don't want anyone making or changing plans until the "official" announcements are made by AF1...

This information was confirmed by a secondary source at the radio staition, and is only being posted here as a "highly likely" tour stop in Hartford.

I was informed that Jim Koplik may "confirm" this date as early as next week... Stay tuned, and I'll do my best to provide you with accurate / reliable information...

Perhaps now, we can make a decision on our vacation plans...

Have a great Holiday weekend...!

U2 even more powerful in second show. . .

The Boston Globe, MA
May 27, 2005

U2 may be peaceniks, but they have a warrior mentality onstage. They were even more potent last night than they were at Tuesday's FleetCenter debut....The upbeat tone was furthered by "Beautiful Day," before Bono launched a long rap about how Boston was not just "the city of Aerosmith and the Cars," but was filled with "smart people who believe in the future, who have faith in the future....

CD Review: "Joe Perry"

Blogcritics.org
May 27, 2005

"...In the middle of the Aerosmith 'strife years', guitarist Joe Perry formed the Joe Perry Project....Many years (and several Aerosmith lives) later, Perry comes up with a true solo record. Firmly ensconced in his home studio (the 'Boneyard'), Joe is back to making 'the big noise'.....The idea that aging rock stars should trundle off quietly into retirement is crushed to a pulp by this collection of songs. 'Shakin' My Cage' comes cranking out of the gate with a severe combination of classic rhythm mayhem, momentum-inducing slide guitar and twisty solo work. Far from being a one-dimensional 'guitar player's' record, 'Joe Perry' shows off Joe's huge guitar sonics palette: from skidding metallic solos to low-down chunky rhythm guitar to gently-strummed acoustic to chiming artificial harmonics. The songs themselves are similarly varied....what seems clear is that it's looking like Joe Perry's just getting started."

Lessons paid off

It's being reported during tonights U2 show in Boston that after Vertigo, U2 played a snippet of Walk This Way, and then after Beautiful Day they played a bit of Dream On. Steven was also reported saying he was going to meet some of the band at the show as he was leaving Mount Blue visiting the Blue Army, and it was announced "Aerosmith was in the house" at the show.

U2 Rumor

Thanks to LovemeJaded:
"Word on some of the U2 message boards is that Steven stopped by their soundcheck today. The Edge wanted to throw in some Aero references in their show in Boston tonight. So Steven showed him the riffs to Walk This Way and Dream On. Be interesting to see if they pop up in their set tonight? Maybe even a Aero-apperance."

U2 shows are bootleged as much as Aerosmith shows, so I would keep a look out for it.

More tour rumors

Thanks to Tony:

According to Jim Koplik, he's holding a date for Aerosmith in the first week of October at the Meadows Music Theater in Hartford, CT...

This was announced on Jim Koplik's weekly radio show on 99.1 WPLR in New Haven, CT.

If this holds true, it would probably be the final outdoor show of the season at the Meadows... Of course, this news is somewhat bittersweet, as we are planning a family vacation in early October...

It's only May, and things could change, but given the fact that Jim has been the concert promoter here in CT since the early 70's, I'd say it's a good bet that the band will begin their tour here in Hartford...as they have on at least two other occasions...

They've also used the Meadows as a pre-tour rehearsal facility in the past, as well...

Start getting ready folks, as the rumor mill cranks up...and you can rest assured, this will be the first of many.,...

Steven met AF1ers @ Mount Blue

From Aero Carol:

"I just got a call from someone who was at Mount Blue tonight, and they said steven showed up for the travel package group, and was signing stuff and taking pictures with the fans. He was on his way to see the U2 concert! Wow! Nice Job af1!"

Joe Perry Interview - Men's Health Magazine

June, 2005

The last time Joe Perry made a solo record, he was drunk, broke, and hooked on smack. Both his first marriage and his band, Aerosmith, had just broken up-mostly because, well, see above-and Perry's life had become a string of drug-induced seizures. Today, he's nearing his 20th year of sobriety and remarriage, has sold more than 100 million records with a reborn Aerosmith, and is rocking solo once again with a new CD, Joe Perry. We asked Perry the secrets of being a rock 'n' roll father of four who raises his kids as well as he raises hell.

On The Importance Of Leaving A Legacy: Steven [Tyler] and I were talking last year and he said, "You know, we've got, like, 20 more summers left." I've come to realize that you live on through recordings; they're like a musical diary, a window into somebody's soul. I had a lot of little pieces of music that didn't have any vocals. It's one of those things where you go, "Ah, I'll get to it someday, when I have more time." But I just hit 54, so it's like, when? I figured, if I hit a tree with my motorcycle, my wife's not going to have anything to put out, so I'd better start singing on some of these compositions.

On Talking To Your Kids About Sex And Drugs Without Being A Hypocrite: The question comes up about why I don't drink, and I just say, "I can't." Every time someone dies from an overdose, we talk about it. We'll see a special on Jimi Hendrix, and I'll point out that he died choking on his own puke because he took drugs. As soon as they're old enough to talk, make these things obvious. It can't be a taboo subject. You don't sit down one day and say, "Use a rubber" and that's it. It's got to be something you reinforce. They're going to go out and make their own choices, and you hope they have enough of a background to realize, "Well, this is what happened to Dad. . . . "

On Staying Fit For The Long Haul: I always believed that if I was going to poison myself and live that kind of life, it would probably help to take vitamins and eat relatively healthy. People would joke with me, "Why do you care about health food, when you're snorting that?" When I got sober and started working out, I fell into that trap of working out too much. I know a lot of guys can relate to that - if you don't get that runner's high every day, you feel like, Oh my God, I'm losing it. Now I try to go to the gym 3 days a week, mostly using free weights and aerobic machines for 20 or 30 minutes. A few weeks before we go on tour I'll double the length of my workout to build up my stamina, because being onstage is a real workout.

On Maintaining Monogamy: I'm turned off by the groupie thing. I'm a romantic; I like finding the right woman, and if it works, it works. There's a drug called naloxone they give to opium addicts. It fits into certain receptors [in the brain] so the opium can't get in. I believe that when you're in love, it works the same way. I mean, I appreciate a beautiful woman. But I'm satisfied. There's no room for anybody else to get in.

On Being A Grown-Up Who Still Rocks: When I was 38 and the band got back together, I went through this stage of "Is this any way for a grown man to make a living-jumping around on the stage in tight pants and long hair?" Then I'd put on an AC/DC record and go, "Yup, still gives me goose bumps." Chuck Berry? "Yup, still gets me hot." It's such a cliche that rock 'n' roll keeps you young, but not being afraid to feel the rock 'n' roll energy truly pervades your life. You're not trapped by that thing that says, "You're too old to rock." That means I'm not too old to do a lot of things. I'm not too old to chase my wife around like a teenager, because that's how I feel. When I plug in my guitar and play it really loud, loud enough to deafen most people, that's my shot of adrenaline, and there's nothing like it. That's what it's always been for me-to be the flame the tribe dances around.

Joe’s Jukebox

The Boston Globe, MA
May 25, 2005

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has posted a "celebrity playlist" on iTunes, and while his selections aren't exactly hip, they're not nearly as insipid as, say, Sheryl Crow's or Mischa Barton's. Perry, who's just released his first solo CD in two decades, favors blues-based guitar rock. Trendy tunes aside -- "The Bucket" by Kings of Leon, for example -- Perry gets props for including the Righteous Brothers' schmaltzy "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," which he says "always makes me feel 17."

Steven Tyler Interview - Classic Rock Magazine

May, 2005

Singer, songwriter, reformed junkie, motormouth, Liv's dad... Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is all and more. And with his band taking a break, we can now add actor and fashion guru to that.

"You got to stay ahead. Just when you think you have it down, the rules change. You know what can happen? You become successful and turn over your power to managers and record companies and you stop taking risks," so says Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. Sort of.

Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, the above quotation is attributed to Steven Tyler in Elmore Leonard's novel Be Cool. And to confuse things further, the real Steven Tyler plays Steven Tyler in the new Hollywood adaptation of the book. Be Cool is the sequel to 1995's smash hit movie Get Shorty, and stars John Travolta (reprising his role of Chili Palmer), Danny De Vito and Uma Thurman.

Who's the coolest person you know?
I'd say Joe Perry, because he bails me out. I'd look over at night and see him there and I'd think: "My God, I can't believe I'm in this band!" It's about somebody that's got that je ne sais quai - where you don't know what it is, but you respect it so much, because you wish you had that cool without putting it on.

How do you know Elmore Leonard, the author of Be Cool?
Elmore came to a bunch of shows and he was doing research. I spoke to him a lot, and he was asking me questions about the real deep inner workings of stuff. One particular night Pamela Anderson was backstage and so was Eminem. Elmore was backstage and he asked: "What's it like? You're going on stage in two minutes and all these people are here..." He's just asking all the right questions. I knew something was going on, and I befriended him and I started telling him a whole lot of deep, dark things, and he goes: "We have to write this in the book and you have to be in the book, when the movie comes out you have to be in the movie". And I'm laughing. Then I read the book and it was like: "My god". And he really went for it.

What was it like working with John Travolta and Uma Thurman?
It was beautiful. I've met John once before. And, as with all good actors, it's like meeting an alien with all this intelligence., You're not talking to it, but it's talking to you.

Would you like to act again?
I would. I had a great experience with F. Gary Gray [Be Cool director]. Yeah, I have the calling, I got the want, and I'd love to try it.

Would you like to work with your daughter Liv [Tyler, actress]?
Yeah, someday. We'll see what happens. I don't know if she would, but I know she wants to sing on one of my records, so I'll hold it against her [laughs].

Are you going to let her sing on one of your albums?
Sure, yeah. Any next one. She was gonna sing on this last one, but she kept going back and forth for voice-overs for The Lord Of The Rings thing.

Is she a good singer?
Yeah, she sings alright. Who's good? It's all about attitude, right?

What's more difficult, doing movies or music?
I don't live in the movie world, but my music world is certainly like the movie world, in the way that we'll write a song then have to do a video of it and make sense of it. And somehow because videos were the thing in the day, I had to put a face on a song instead of letting it be what it is, and letting you find out what it was. Because it's better-whatever Dream On is to you, it's different to you... As soon as you do a video, it kinda puts a face on it. .. I'm not sure where I'm at with all of it.

Is Be Cool realistic? Does it include situations that you've encountered?
Sure it is. Oh yeah, I've encountered it. Yep. I'd fought it all along, every bit of it - the corporate this and that. And, of course, I was in with the drugs and the money in the old days. Put that aside and you're talking about the deep, dark persons kept away from the rock-star singer by management. But I've seen my share. I mean, I prefer to write the songs and keep away from that side. Not that I don't see it, but there's not much you can do about it.

How did Aerosmith fit in with the times?
We just wrote songs. We didn't see whate' going on with the corporate side.

The director wanted you to play the real Tyler, not the stage Steven Tyler, right?
I don't remember. My last name is Tallarico, Steven Tallarico. People that know me say: "I wish they knew you as the real guy you are, Steven Tyler. And I said: "What do you mean?" Because I become this persona of this rock-star guy, Not who I am to my kids.

What's the biggest difference between the stage persona and the real Steven Tyler?
One side can be larger-than-life, you know. At home I feed the chickens and let the dogs out every morning. I take my son to school. It's great.

What keeps you motivated?
The thought that if you just mind to it you can make it happen to have that pride to just keep going for it no matter what.

You recently became a grandfather.
Amazing. When you have a baby its one thing, when your daughter [Liv] has a baby, you know, it's life on life's terms.

Have you changed any nappies?
Not yet. The other night I brought my daughter, Chelsea, to meet the new baby. I put the baby on her chest and the baby threw up on her. You know when you have your kids, and you're there for them now? Well, I wasn't there in the beginning. It was one of the sweetest things I've ever experienced: the baby threw up on Chelsea, and she changed the diaper, and it was just one of those family moments. For me, being on the road so much, I don't get a lot of that. It was real deep and beautiful and real.

Is being a grandfather scary?
Scary? I'm 56 and it's all just starting.

Are you worried about getting old?
As long as I got a hit single next time with Joe Perry... No, it's all beautiful. You know my face hasn't fallen off yet, so I'm alright.

Aerosmith Guitarist's Solo Vacation Won't Be Permanent

MTV.com
May 25, 2005

When Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry wrote his wife Billie a love song, "Ten Years," to celebrate their 10-year anniversary, he had no idea the tender cut would eventually be the 10th track on one of his solo albums 10 years later.

"It was her idea, actually, so how could I say no?" Perry said. "I wrote it when we were in preproduction for an Aerosmith record. When the session was over, I just took a few pieces of poetry I had written and put some music to it and cut and pasted it together. That song came completely out of the blue."

Much like Joe Perry. While the veteran guitarist has played on three Aerosmith studio albums since 1997, his last solo album was 1984's Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker. That and its two predecessors, 1980's Let the Music Do the Talking and the following year's I've Got the Rock 'n' Rolls Again, were released during Perry's five-year split with Aerosmith. Joe Perry isn't a sign that there are any new ills in the Aerosmith camp; it's simply an indication that Perry's been itching to make another solo record.

"Aerosmith took a yearlong break after our last tour last year," Perry said. "We really needed that, but I still felt like making music. So I culled together material from demos and guitar riffs and half-songs I've had and worked on over the last 10 years. Some of them were steamrolling guitar riffs than never made it onto Aerosmith records, and other ones were things that I never thought I'd play for anybody else."

Although Joe Perry was assembled from scraps the guitarist had lying around the house, the album holds together as well as anything on "Monster Garage." Throughout, Perry blends freewheeling rockers like "Shakin' My Cage" and "Push Comes to Shove" with love songs like "Ten Years" and quasi-psychedelic tracks such as "Pray for Me." There are even covers of the Doors' "Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man."

"I wanted to make a diverse rock record that I could listen to from front to back and have some fun with," Perry said. "To me, it's more like a musical journey than anything else I've done on my own before."

When Perry says on his own, that's pretty much what he means. Not only did he handle all the songwriting and guitars, he also played bass and sang. The only thing he didn't play were drums, which were tackled by co-producer Paul Caruso.

"I tried doing the drums as well, but I just wasn't up to it," Perry admitted. "I can play drums OK, but I really wouldn't be serving the songs anywhere near what they deserved if I did it. Of course, [Aerosmith drummer] Joey [Kramer] lives right around the corner, but I didn't want to bother him. We spend enough time onstage, so Paul filled in and did a great job."

And while Perry isn't quite ready to replace Steven Tyler as Aerosmith's main voice, he was perfectly content with the blues-inflected baritone vocals he brought to the record. In fact, he plans to apply newly learned vocal techniques to the next Aerosmith disc.

"By not trying to push my voice into the higher range and staying where I feel comfortable, I was able to take my vocals to places I hadn't really been before," he said. "So that opened up a lot of doors for me that I want to revisit."

Perry will support his album with select shows and rejoin his bandmates when Aerosmith start rehearsing at the end of August for a fall tour. While the band won't have a new studio disc to support, it will likely be touring behind an upcoming live CD and DVD.

"We don't have that much live stuff out, and one of the things fans have been requesting is a straight live DVD that's a whole concert rather than something cut up with backstage footage," Perry said. "So we're looking at a few shows, some of which are from the last tour, and that's something we'd really like to do."

At this point, Aerosmith plan to finish the tour, then return to the studio in 2006 to work on the follow-up to last year's blues album, Honkin' on Bobo (see "Steven Tyler's Throat Leaves Aerosmith Singin' The Blues"). Perry expects the new Aerosmith record to sound like a hybrid of the loose, freewheeling Bobo and 2001's more technical Just Push Play.

"We have 30 years of playing live together, and that's a real asset," Perry said. "And that's what we drew from on Bobo. We didn't have time to do a full studio record, but we wanted to press the reset button and do something that was less layered and precise. I hope some of that rubs off on our next recording experience so there's still some of that live edge."

May 19, 2005

"Rock and roll hall of famer Steven Tyler of Aerosmith will receive an honorary degree at the commencement exercises for the University of Massachusetts Boston, to be held on Friday, June 3 at the Campus Center lawn, UMass Boston, 100 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, at 10:00 a.m. Tyler is being honored for his community activism in the Greater Boston area.

The Boston-based band Aerosmith, comprised of charismatic front man Tyler and bandmates Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whiftord, has sold more than 100 million records with hits such as 'Walk this Way,' 'Rag Doll,' 'Love in an Elevator,' 'Dream On,' and 'Angel.' Aerosmith has been a staple on rock stations since its inception in 1970.

A Massachusetts resident, Tyler is a frequent supporter and contributor to charitable causes throughout the Commonwealth. Tyler and his band have contributed their time and talent in support of Victory Programs, Inc., a Boston-based non-profit agency that provides individualized treatment programs to people recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Their fundraising efforts have supported Victory Programs’ residential alcoholism and substance abuse treatment programs.

Tyler has lent his voice numerous times to a variety of Boston-based causes. In December 2003, he read 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' for a celebrity-filled children’s CD that supported ReadBoston, Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s city wide early-literacy initiative. His partnership with the mayor’s office continued in August 2004 when he recorded a narrative for the Talking Street Tour 'Boston: City of Rebels and Dreamers,' which guides visitors through the historical streets of Boston.

Tyler has frequently joined the roster of Bostonian do-gooders, lending his support for Cam Neely’s 'Betting on a Cause Cure,' a fundraiser for cancer research, and Celebrity Hat Trick events, fundraisers led by The Leary Firefighters Foundation.

Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and named an MTV icon in 2002..."

Mile-High Club: Worcester Firm Clears Aerosmith Fans For Takeoff

Boston Herald
May 17, 2005

Aerosmith has something cool for its biggest fans.

A fan club that works.

That's the promise of Aero Force One, the official Aerosmith fan club (www.aeroforceone.com). Worcester-based Paid Inc. Celebrity Services has taken over the operation of the club to guarantee members get coveted seats to Aerosmith concerts instead of excuses.

This improved fan club model sounds so good that even a famous but defunct Boston band has teamed with Paid: the Cars.

"The fan club industry was weak on fulfillment, customer service and technology," says Greg Rotman, Paid's CEO. "Fans weren't getting tickets. The last thing a band wants to do is upset its biggest fans."

Aerosmith fans aren't the only ones who have griped about spending $30 or more to join a fan club and not getting access to choice tickets. Consider U2's recent disaster. Fans paid $40 to the band's Propaganda fan club at www.u2.com for presale ticket privileges for the Vertigo tour (which arrives in Boston for three shows next week at the TD Banknorth Garden).

Some fans received nosebleed seats. They were the lucky ones. Most got zilch. So many complained that U2's drummer Larry Mullen issued an apology and promised angry U2ies seats for the fall leg of the Vertigo tour or a refund of the $40 fee.

Paid intends to make sure a similar situation won't occur when Aerosmith tours this fall.

"Most bands' fans clubs only start up when there's a tour," Rotman says. "But when you announce 30 tour dates and your Web site gets hit by 30,000 people in three hours, the system crashes.

We already have the software," he says. "Very expensive software. We host for thousands of eBay sellers and 50 sports sites. When Aerosmith tours next we're going to make sure the fans are taken care of."

That means more than just ticket access.

"We're great at adding value," Rotman says. "There will be tons of interactive events and contests. There will be live chats with band members and message boards for a real community feel. If we design a new Aerosmith pin, we put up five designs and ask 'Which one do you like?' Steven Tyler now wears a necklace with a design chosen by fans. You can see it online at the Aerosmith store."

And May 25-27, Aero Force One will bring fans from around the country to Boston for a three-day "Behind the Aerosmith Door" tour. For $1,195 they'll get to visit Long View Farms recording studio and the Zildjian cymbal factory, meet with Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer, dine at Tyler and Joe Perry's Mount Blue restaurant and more.

Paid's other music clients to date include Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of Run-DMC, who's launching a comeback, and the Cars, who aren't.

Or are they? Why else start a fan club?

"The band has made a decision that it would like that fans have a place to come together," says Cars' manager Frank Cimler. "The Web site will have historic pictorial and video material that the world has never seen. It will be a very special place to go to."

Cimler says all four of the surviving Cars as well as the estate of the group's late singer/bassist Ben Orr support the creation of the band's first official fan club and Web site. As for a new tour or new album, he declines comment.

But Rotman hints that the Cars might be revving up again.

"From our point of view," he says, "we really are looking to work with bands that are going to be releasing albums and touring."

You don't need to join a fan club to draw your own conclusion.

When Bruce Springsteen played Fenway a few years ago, he was joined onstage by Peter Wolf. So who might sing backup when the Rolling Stones rock the ballpark? How about Steven Tyler? Chatting before Saturday's benefit at Medford's Chevalier Theatre for the Middlesex Human Service Agency, the Aerosmith frontman said he plans to see the Stones and may end up onstage. "Am I going to get up and sing with them? I hope so," said Tyler, sporting a skull ring a la Keith Richards.

Perry and Son Work It Out In Style

Boston Herald
May 16, 2005

For a guy who is supposed to be enjoying the bluesy Twilight of his Aerosmith hiatus, Joe Perry is acting like the hardest-working man in show biz.

The axman, whose solo effort was released last week to better-than-decent reviews, is finally winding down his East Coast promo tour in the Big Apple. But before blowing out of Gotham, he's got to shoot a fall fashion spread with his 18-year-old model son, Tony, for designing divo John Varvatos.

"We've thought about doing some stuff on the West Coast for the record, but we're undecided right now," said Perry. "Frankly, I'm ready to lay on the beach." But not before posing for the father-and-son fashion spread and checking out his 10-second cut-ins of "Shakin' My Cage" and "Push Comes to Shove" that ABC plans to use during the NBA Finals.

"It's been an exciting time," Joe told the Track. "But as much fun as it's been working on the new album, I really appreciate working with the other guys (meaning Steven Tyler & Co.). I had to do everything myself, making four times as many calls, make four times as many decisions, but I guess it comes with the territory."

The plan is for the Bad Boys to reunite in September and hit the road in October. Tyler, who's had some upheaval on the spousal front (his wife, Teresa, left him for a younger man), is "doin' OK," said Perry. "I can't keep track of him - he's riding motorcycles, doing charity work. Last month, he was busy remixing our live album. He's doing good."

Aerosmith Guitarist In Spotlight With Solo Album

Reuters via Yahoo! Launch News
May 16, 2005

Joe Perry swears he is not after Steven Tyler's job. With Aerosmith on vacation, the band's guitarist has released his first solo album in more than 20 years, singing on every track and playing every instrument but drums. A collection of bluesy guitar rock songs, the self-titled Columbia Records release sold a modest 10,000 copies during its first week, with hardly any promotion or radio play.

"I don't have any delusions of it being anything other than my own personal journal of what I like about rock 'n' roll," Perry, 54, told Reuters in a recent interview. Perry released his previous three solo records in more tumultuous times, having temporarily quit Aerosmith in the early 1980's when its members were mired in a drug haze. He hired singers then, but not now.

"I started getting comfortable and more interested in writing lyrics," he said. "I had such an emotional attachment to the lyrics that I felt like I wanted to take a shot at interpreting them myself." The album features a cover of The Doors' song "Crystal Ship," which prompted some critics to compare Perry's baritone to Jim Morrison's voice.

"I admire that style, guys who sing low, like Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, Nick Cave. I'll take that (comparison) any day," he said. Perry's lyrics show a more vulnerable side of the hard rock guitarist, evident in songs such as "Ten Years," written for his wife Billie on their 10th anniversary. "I'm in love with my wife. I'm really lucky to have that. This is a sensitive side of me that doesn't show itself as much in Aerosmith," he said. He has sung occasionally on Aerosmith albums, including the track "Walk on Down" on 1993's "Get a Grip."

Perry will play a few live shows to support the release, but he won't take too much time off from his day job. Aerosmith will tour in the fall before starting work on a new album. "We have another studio album to create and I don't know what direction it's going to take," he said. "I'd like to see the (rock-oriented album) 'Just Push Play' mode and the (blues-flavored) 'Honkin' On Bobo' mode put in a blender together."
