Aerosmith's Perry Preps For Release Of Solo Album

Reuters via Yahoo! Launch News
April 30, 2005

Los Angeles (Billboard) - One major benefit of releasing his first solo album in 21 years is that Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry can finally stop having to answer the incessant question from fans, "When are you going to put out another one?"
The self-titled album, which features Perry on all instruments (except drums) and vocals, comes out May 3 on Columbia. He produced the album, and even co-mixed the CD, with assistance from Paul Caruso.

Part of the impetus to finally record a new solo record was the feedback Perry received on "Ten Years," a midtempo ballad he wrote for his wife, Billie, to herald their 10th wedding anniversary. Although he never intended for fans to hear the song, when he played it for friends they encouraged him to show the public his sensitive side, despite his reluctance.

Additional courage to pursue the project came from a strange place. "Howard Stern said when he starts twinging inside when he's talking about something, he knows (he's) hitting a taboo subject and he knows he's doing good radio," Perry says. "And I thought about that as far as being an artist goes: I guess whenever you show a piece of yourself that you're a little scared to show or a little sensitive about, you're treading on ground that's actually important for the listener because it's real."

READING THE CLASSICS

For inspiration for the album, Perry turned to the best. After preparation for Aerosmith's last album, "Honkin' on Bobo," led him to delve back into his old blues records, Perry turned to the literary classics. "I didn't go to college, I wasn't exposed to much other than what came my way, which wasn't much." He read Hemingway, Keats and other masters as he wrote.

While making the album, Perry also had to deal with the shifting dynamics of recording a solo album versus an Aerosmith album, which are legendarily difficult endeavors. "A solo album has its own batch of problems," Perry says. "I had to spend more time digging down. There's a good side to working with four other guys, but you have to sublimate part of your own ego to work in that environment. With a solo album, you can put too much of yourself into it and think everything's great and it's not. That's probably the scariest part of it."

But soon, the album demanded to be born. "I had all these songs, but I didn't plan on doing a record," Perry says. "I thought if I had another year and another $100,000 to spend on it, I'd take this batch of songs, play with a band, work with Rick Rubin, but it felt like it was time."

The first single, the stomping "Shakin' the Cage," was released to active and heritage rock radio stations April 12.

Perry will play a few live gigs to support the release, but his day job beckons. Aerosmith goes back on the road this fall before starting work on a new studio album. In tandem with the tour, Columbia will release a live album recorded primarily at Hard Rock's the Joint in Las Vegas in 2004.

Feature Story

Aero Force One
By: John Bionelli

Two For The Show

Hey Folks,
Back in Beantown!!!

As everyone knows, Joe's CD comes out next week and he is doing plenty to keep himself and his band busy. He will be playing only 2 shows. Monday the 1st at Harpers Ferry in Boston. Which is about a half mile away from 1325 Comm Ave. Then at Webster Hall in NYC on the 5th. He will also be on The Conan O'Brien show that day.

As I write this, the band is rehearsing at the Boneyard. They will be playing almost all of the tracks on Joe's CD as well as a couple you may have heard Aerosmith do. The band includes Paul Caruso, Audley Freed and Charley Drayton. These guys are top notch musicians but also bring some stank to the party.

See you out there!!

John B.

Eavesdropping

We Hear: That Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler will pick up an honorary degree at the University of Massachusetts at Boston's first-ever outdoor graduation ceremonies June 3. "Greater Boston" gal Emily Rooney and Leonel Fernandez, the president of the Dominican Republic, will also be honored.

Brad Whitford At Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Blabbermouth.net, NY
April 29, 2005

Susan Guyett of IndyStar.com has issued the following report:

A quartet of rock stars — Brian Johnson of AC/DC (photo), Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, Jesse Dupree of Jackyl and Rachel Bolan of Skid Row — headed to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Thursday (April 28) with NASCAR racing on their minds.

Some of the rockers are true gear heads, according to Chris McKee of the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Johnson and Whitford collect cars and follow all forms of auto racing.

But the musicians were there for more than love of the sport. A film crew was on hand, so their exploits on the 2.5-mile oval can be turned into a Speed Channel special, McKee said.

Instructors and authentic NASCAR-style stock cars will be at the track until Sunday, giving the rest of the world a chance to ride along or ride alone. Three laps as a passenger goes for $125; a solo trip of eight laps costs $499. Those with money to burn can consider the 24-lap solo trip that costs $2,099.

"Joe Perry" - Music Review

Boston Herald
April 29, 2005

More compelling and harder-rocking than at least two of his three previous solo albums - and a few Aerosmith albums as well - "Joe Perry" shows what Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry did during the band's not-permanent vacation. And it sure sounds like he had fun making this play-it-yourself, home-studio production, which hits stores Tuesday.

Featuring a palette of guitar tones that would make Billy Gibbons green, "Joe Perry" is a bolt of raging, multilayered blues-rock chased with elements of Aerosmithian exotica, a few nice-guy ballads and a couple of pointed instrumentals. It comes in the new DualDisc format: a standard CD on one side and a bunch of DVD extras on the other.

Perry's deadpan, offhand voice occasionally recalls Lou Reed and Jim Morrison - and he makes the latter connection explicit with a cover of The Doors' "Crystal Ship." If the vocals occasionally sound uninspired, that's not something you can say about the guitar playing, which is copious, incendiary and gripping. When the music does the talking, "Joe Perry" speaks highly of its maker. Download: "Can't Compare."

The Basement Tapes

The Boston Globe
April 29, 2005

In his downstairs studio, Aerosmith's Joe Perry has created a solo CD that's full of surprises

Duxbury -- Joe Perry is taking a visitor down to the Boneyard.

It's the basement studio in his home, where Aerosmith recorded the albums "Just Push Play" and "Honkin' on Bobo." Perry and Steven Tyler also wrote a lot of the "Get a Grip" CD in these cozy confines, where candles and a poster of Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page add ambience.

But the CD that Perry pops into the sound system has nothing to do with Aerosmith.

It's his own album, "Joe Perry" -- his first solo effort in 20 years, since the days of the Joe Perry Project, back when he had left Aerosmith before reuniting for the massive success that lay ahead.

Aerosmith took this year off -- and will regroup in September -- but Perry retreated to the Boneyard and started rocking. The result is a record (coming out Tuesday, preceded by a Harpers Ferry show on Monday) that is going to surprise people. It's a slamming, guitar-screaming disc that is old-school without being the stuff of dinosaur rock.

Perry plays all the guitars and the bass, while teaming up with drummer/fellow South Shore friend Paul Caruso, who used to pound the skins for local club faves the Atlantics.

"I pretty much dismissed the whole solo thing because Aerosmith can be a full-time job," says Perry. "But I had leftover riffs, so I decided to start filling in the blanks with some songs. . . . These were things that didn't make it onto Aerosmith records, along with some stuff that I wrote in the last few months."

Perry clicks on the first song, "Shakin' My Cage," and suddenly the walls are shaking.

"Is this loud enough for you?" he says with a smile.

Other booty-shaking songs follow. The tune "Hold on Me" rocks like ZZ Top's "Legs," while "Pray for Me" has a Middle Eastern Zeppelin feel, and another sounds like a whomping pairing of Canned Heat and the Cramps.

"It's not a bunch of ballads," Perry says. "It's not that I'm just mellowing out and don't want to play loud because I don't want to hurt my ears. I love playing with this kind of energy and this kind of fire."

Drummer Caruso, who will be part of the Harpers Ferry band (along with guitarist Audley Freed of Black Crowes renown), is ecstatic that he was asked to participate. Caruso had served as Aerosmith's engineer for a bunch of the band's Boneyard studio sessions.

"Joe could have had anyone in the world play on his record," says Caruso, who lives five minutes away. "But it was great the way we'd work together. He'd try to inspire me by saying, 'OK, we're at Woodstock. The Who just finished and Keith Moon played his [butt] off. What are you going to do?' So he pushes you. I've played more aggressively on this record than on anything that I've ever done."

"I wasn't working steadily at this like you would an Aerosmith record," says Perry. "There's a lot of spontaneity on these songs."

Some are hard-rock love songs with his wife, Billie, in mind, while others have a "party vibe," as he puts it. He adds an instrumental called "Twilight" ("That's a tip of my hat to the Ventures and Les Paul and the guitar instrumentals from the '50s and '60s") and effective covers of the Doors' "Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man."

"I put it on there because it still works today," he says of the Guthrie tune. "It's for anybody who still thinks they have a final say in things -- whether it's the Saddam Husseins of the world or whoever -- just because they have a gun in their hands. That doesn't mean they are above the law."

It is Perry's singing, however, that may be the biggest shock. Some people have said that, vocally, he is Keith Richards to Tyler's Mick Jagger, but they'll have to reassess that remark. Perry overdubs some of his vocals to soften them, but he is nowhere near as harsh as Richards.

"I think my voice has just gotten seasoned," Perry says. "It's gotten stronger by singing with Aerosmith through the years."

Come autumn, Perry expects to be back with Aerosmith on the road. He says they may release a live album and might also play the FleetCenter.

"Everybody has just gone and lived their life for a while this year," he says, noting that Tyler has done some fund-raising and acted in the film "Be Cool," while guitarist Brad Whitford has indulged his passion for car racing.

"Aerosmith is lifelong," he says. "I look at it as a legacy or a dynasty. Aerosmith has been around too long to just say, 'Oh, I think we'll break up next year.' We went through all of that already."

For now, the beat goes on in the Boneyard.

Perry-ly We Roll Along - Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry stretches his solo limbs next week. He releases a CD, "Joe Perry," on Tuesday, and advances it with a low-key show at Harper's Ferry on Monday. It's billed as a "listening party/live performance." He's expected to do nine or 10 songs in a band format that also features drummer Paul Caruso, who played on the album.

Mr. Aerosmith goes it alone - Joe Perry lets his voice do the talking

The Boston Phoenix
April 28, 2005

To rock-and-roll fans, Joe Perry’s half the front line of Aerosmith, a position he’s held since founding the group with Steven Tyler in New Hampshire in 1970 and moving to Boston to achieve fame. To Aerosmith fans, Perry’s the group’s rock-and-roll soul — a strong, silent, guitar-slinging bad-ass who’s always let the music do the talking. All the same, Perry spoke to us about his debut solo album, a slide-fueled slam-and-soothe affair with the no-frills title Joe Perry that comes out this Tuesday on Columbia. Nobody’s going to call him the new Dylan after hearing the disc’s dozen numbers, which are dominated by love songs and instrumentals, but the power and the craftsmanship of his playing are transfixing.

Holding court in his well-appointed South Shore home studio, the Boneyard, the soft-spoken Perry talks about guitars, songwriting, romance, album making, Aerosmith, and his newly discovered true singing voice. He’s always sung harmony with Tyler, and he took the lead for a few vocal tracks on Aerosmith’s 2004 blues tribute, Honkin’ on Bobo (Columbia), but when he last stepped outside the group — from 1979 to 1984 with his Joe Perry Project — it was with vocalist Charlie Farren. This time, he not only sings all his lyrics, he plays everything on Joe Perry except drums and keyboards.

Q: Given Steven Tyler’s proclivity for writing smash ballads and being in the spotlight, many Aerosmith fans thought he’d be the first band member with a solo album.

A: He’s talked about it, but I’m always in the studio writing and recording. In fact, the song "Ten Years" I wrote 10 years ago for my wife Billie’s and my tenth anniversary. That’s how far back some of these songs go. A lot started as licks that were recorded and sitting on a shelf saying, "Finish me!" Sometimes those licks are run by the band and end up being the basis for an Aerosmith song, but out of 20 ideas, we might use three and the rest sit there.

I have favorite ideas and riffs that I’ll drop on a mini disc so I can take them with me. And when I get a spare minute, I’ll come down here and bring one of them up to the level of a song. Two or three years ago, I realized I had a big pile of instrumental music I’d written that never got used for songs. I thought, "If I run off the road on my Harley and I’m dead, Billie’s gonna have nothing to put out — just a bunch of guitar licks. I should finish some." Because they’re not really songs until you get a vocal on them.

When the band took a year off, it felt like the time to finish this stuff. And when I started mixing, what was written six months or a year ago felt more immediate to me. So I wrote "Shakin’ My Cage" and "Push Comes to Shove" and "Lonely." I put the last guitar tracks down in December.

Q: You’ve always been a band player — someone who feeds off the energy of other musicians to get inspired. What was it like playing all the tracks yourself?

A: Paul, the engineer, was also the drummer, and we brought a keyboard player in for some overdubs for about three hours, but otherwise it was me. It’s funny, because we have a "making of" video in the CD package as well as a Dolby 5.1 mix on the B-side and two U-Mix-It cuts, "Push Comes to Shove" and the instrumental "Mercy," that fans can remix on their computers. Paul and I worked together so long that it got kind of boring, so we had to do little things to liven the video up. We used home movies from the road, and I did a bit where I played both parts of a band fight.

For most of the songs, I’d have an idea for a riff and Paul and I would work up a drum loop I’d use as a springboard for working out the arrangement. Then I’d usually put bass down to flesh it out, then a vocal or a guitar. Once I figured out where the vocal would go and had the chorus worked up, Paul would play real drums and I’d get deeper into the guitars.

There’s a certain feel that happens when musicians do all their own tracks. I could hear it when McCartney did it or when Stevie Wonder played drums on his own songs. I noticed I played the bass with the same kind of attack I have on guitar. It’s like you’re in a band and have tremendous rapport. "Wow! I can read the other guy’s mind!" It sounds like I’ve been playing with him for nearly 45 years, since I started playing when I was 12.

Q: If there’s any sound that’s a signature on this album, it’s ripping slide guitar. How did you get into playing slide?

A: The first time I saw anybody play slide was Jeff Beck, who played in standard tuning. The guy I really saw rip it up in open tuning was Johnny Winter. He had his big Firebird going through four Fender Twin Reverb amps and it was great. He’s always been a big influence. I’ve studied Ry Cooder and Muddy Waters. Ron Wood is a great electric slide player. They’re all part of my vocabulary. I love to play slide and lap steel. I’ve had a few goes at pedal steel, but it’s a hard instrument. I’ve even had a pedal steel made with just six strings, but it’s a whole different animal.

Meet the director and producer of the "Eat the Rich" video for an Aerosmith Q&A session. Hear all the insider stories about the band from the Long View staff who will be AF1's tour guides. Fans will see "The Farm's" private video footage of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and other happenings at "The Farm" while artists lived onsite during their recording sessions. Participants will see where Steven Tyler wrote "Eat the Rich," the piano where he cranked out "Amazing" in under two hours, and the bedroom where Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have crashed (or partied!) after their various recording sessions.

Aerosmith's high-level insiders will be with the group at Long View Farm and possibly other points of the tour to offer insights into Aerosmith's astronomical rise to the top of the charts and their enduring success that has spanned decades. Other special guests may also join the tour at key points.

AF1 VIPs will spend the first night partying at the original "Aerosmithsonian," a special mini-museum devoted to Aerosmith memorabilia, in The Hard Rock Cafe in Boston. The second night, they will sup at the killer Mount Blue restaurant in Norwell, Mass., which is co-owned by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

This incredible travel package includes two night's hotel accommodations at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Boston, exclusive bags of swag (full of killer Aerosmith stuff like specially-designed T-shirts, pewter Aerosmith wing pins, souvenir cards and photos only available to AF1 fan experience participants), tour costs, tour transportation via motorcoach and all meals/drinks per the itinerary. Transportation from and to the participant's origination point is not included. Cost is $1,195 per person double-occupancy, or $1,295 per person single-occupancy. Steven Tyler at Boston's Lenny Kravitz Performance

Boston Globe, MA
April 26, 2005

Lenny Kravitz can be a walking contradiction. On the one hand, he sings of letting love rule and being a ''minister of rock 'n' roll" who has come to ''save your soul." But on Sunday, he also strutted around in a glittery silver belt befitting an overripe Elvis Presley in Las Vegas....Kravitz soared with Grammy-winning hits "Fly Away" and "American Woman," as well as newer songs "Lady" (inspired by ex-girlfriend Nicole Kidman: "She's cool, she's divine," he sang) and "Again," about a lover who is a "sacred gift from heaven. But the highlight was "Be," dedicated to Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, who sat up front. "Lord, what's the matter, am I lost? Am I a junkie, what is my fate?" sang Kravitz before finishing with the hopeful verse, "The mind can see as long as you'll be for real with yourself."

That it Still Ain't Over Til It's Over for Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, whose entrance at Lenny Kravitz's show at the Orpheum sent the audience into a screaming-cell-phone-camera-shooting frenzy the other night. Lenny, being a big Steven fan himself, gave the rocker a shout-out from the stage.

Aerosmith Guitarist To Guest On 'Late Night With Conan O'Brien'

Blabbermouth.net, NY
April 25, 2005

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry wil be a featured guest on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on Thursday, May 5.

As previously reported, Perry will celebrate the release of his self-titled solo album (which comes out May 3) with a special performance at the Webster Hall club in New York City on May 5. As of now, it's the only show he's announced. Perry told Launch Radio Networks that he had some ideas about a short tour, but it just didn't work out, so this New York City event is the next best thing. "I'd thought about doing that at first, but I, I think that it's gonna take up too much time, so I'm gonna give this a real good kick-off party, and with the help of the record company, we're gonna have some fun with that in New York, and then it's gonna be off on its own," he said.

Perry will be the featured guest on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" airing Monday, May 9, with an encore presentation scheduled for May 11. The live show begins at 8:30 p.m. PT / 11:30 p.m. ET, and fans are encouraged to call in with questions during the program
at (800) 344-ROCK (7625). To find a station near you, check out RocklineRadio.com.

Aerosmith is nearing the end of their year-long break, so Perry will rejoin his mates for a lengthy tour starting in late September or early October. The band will also release a live album at that time.

Aerosmith Frontman To Launch Clothing Line

Blabbermouth.net, NY
April 25, 2005

Classic Rock Magazine is reporting that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is in the process of launching his own clothing label, which should make its debut sometime this year. It's called Tyler Overland, he told the magazine, and no, before you get an image of Aerosmith mainman walking around with tailor's chalk and tape measure, he won't be doing the nitty gritty of the design process himself. "I met a girl who did my stage clothes, and they're exactly what I wore in the old days, and I just said, 'Let's do it,'" he explained. "When I look at the clothes, it was put together with such passion, each piece has a life of its own. And it's going to be high end. It's just going to be a good thing to buy and have." And just how popular does he anticipate his clothing range is going to be? "HUGE," he laughs, "just unreal, all that I can dream."

Guitar for Kurt Cobain Added to "Rock The Cure"

Blabbermouth.net, NY
April 25, 2005

ABC ePrep is reporting that a guitar designed by Kurt Cobain's mother and sister is among the decorated axes for sale at "Rock The Cure", a star-studded charity auction that will take place May 3 at The Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles. As previously reported, the auction features guitars decorated by the likes of Rod Stewart, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood, Brian Johnson of AC/DC, and Sheryl Crow. It will benefit the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Cobain's mother is a breast cancer survivor, and she decorated the guitar with never-before-seen photos of Cobain.

Bidding on the guitars has started, and if you're interested in bidding, or would just like to check out the guitars, log on to JuliensAuctions.com.

Steven Tyler at the Orpheum Theatre

Boston Herald, MA
April 25, 2005

"Lenny Kravitz, the self-appointed minister of rock 'n' roll, brought his Electric Church tour to a sold-out Orpheum Sunday night....Frequently, the black-clad star simply posed and basked in the adulation of his congregation which included Aerosmith's Steven Tyler (and his pretty blond companion), milking every last hand clap and 'woo-hoo.' But when the buff, tattooed Kravitz finally did flex his musical muscles, the crowd's love was deserved and earned. 'Fly Away,' 'Again' and 'Always on the Run' were darn near magical...."

"The Yardbirds" - By Steven Tyler

Rolling Stone Magazine
April 22, 2005

In the special "Immortals" issue of Rolling Stone Magazine chronicling "The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time," Aerosmith's Steven Tyler pays tribute to The Yardbirds:

"Listen to 'Somebody,' a song I wrote for Aerosmith's first album: It's all from the Yardbirds. They were the shit to us, out of all the British bands in the Sixties. The Yardbirds were a bit of a mystery. They had an eclecticism -- the Gregorian chant-ness of the vocals, the melodic diversity, the way they used guitar feedback. I loved that weirdness.

In the Sixties, I was in a band called Chain Reaction. We got to know the Yardbirds because they played at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, in 1966. We had a friend, Henry Smith, who had been our manager for a while, and he had gone to school there. He called me and said, 'Steven, the Yardbirds are playing here, and you can open up.' It was the lineup with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, who was playing bass on that tour. We waited all day for them to arrive. I grabbed their amps, they grabbed ours. We carried each other's gear in, because back then, that's what you did. Hence began the rumor that I was a roadie for the Yardbirds.

They did 'Shapes of Things,' 'Beck's Boogie,' among other songs. I was in such awe. They played like no other band. They weren't concerned with clothes or looks or hit singles. Their thing was 'What do we do with these sounds?' They did things with harmonics -- minor thirds and fifths -- that created this ethereal, monstrous sound.

You hear it in every song -- the way they could take the blues and turn it into a pop song like 'For Your Love,' then something psychedelic like 'Shapes of Things,' which has that weird middle. You can hear the click when Beck hits his fuzz box. Page, in the end, was the one who took those ideas all the way with Led Zeppelin. The two shows I remember where I just sat with my mouth open was that Yardbirds show, and Led Zeppelin at the Boston Tea Party in 1969.

As a singer, the thing I got out of the Yardbirds was that you don't have to have a great voice. It's all about attitude. Keith Relf wasn't great, but how he sang it made him a master. He was a white boy who pushed it to the max. And he was a great harmonica player. You never heard Jagger hanging out on a single note the way Keith Relf could.

The shame is, I know how great the Yardbirds were. But I don't think everyone else knows it. The Yardbirds' music is a gold mine waiting to be stumbled upon. Aerosmith did, because we grew up in that era. The riff in 'Walk This Way' is just us trying to explore the blues in the Yardbirds model. What the Yardbirds did is something you don't hear in today's blue-plate-special, cookie-cutter music. Everything is so canned and sliced up now. This was back when a band was a band. You had all those personalities, and they were all truly playing together. And I don't hear that today. The day of those bands, that wild stepping out, is gone."

R U Ready to Rock?

Stereophile Magazine
April 18, 2005

Hot Licks: Add another title to UmixIt's catalog of DualDisc Enhanced DVD/CDs: Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry's eponymous solo album, his first since 1984.

UmixIt-enabled discs allow musically minded listeners to load selected songs into their PCs and manipulate the individual tracks of the studio session to create a mix that meets their criteria for sonic success—which might or might not be more "accurate" than the official release. Within the listeners' computers, the tracks are uncompressed, but only compressed MP3 files can be exported to CD-R or MP3 players.

Perry seems impressed with the format's possibilities: "The great thing about UmixIt is that fans can use their imagination and creativity. They get to go into the original instrumental and vocal tracks and create their own versions of the songs just like they're in the studio with me. It also gives them a new perspective on the music they listen to because they can strip it down to its most basic elements and then rebuild it the way their own ears hear it."

But wait, there's more! Www.joeperrymusic.com reports that those who order the disc in advance from the website will receive a "free mini bottle of Joe Perry's 'Rock Your World' hot sauce."

Joe Perry will be released on May 3.
