Aerosmith - ‘We’ve always wanted to play in India’

Aerosmith, sometimes called the greatest American rock and roll band, is finally coming to India. Before their performance in Bangalore on June 2, the famous five of the Grammy-winning band talk about their reunion and the India tour in an e-mail interview with our correspondent.

How did the India tour come about?
This country has always fascinated us. We’ve always wanted to play in India and it has finally happened.

What expectations do you have of the Indian audience?
Well, this is the first time we are playing in India, so we don’t really know what to expect at all! We’re hoping that everyone at the show will have an awesome time.

How have things been with the band after the reunion in 1984?
Great and awesome! It is the same feeling we had when we first started.

To what do you guys attribute 37 years of sustained popularity, acclaim and success?
To our fans. Without them, we wouldn’t be nominated for, let alone win, the Grammies. Don’t get me wrong, winning a Grammy is amazing and hearing your name being read out is a great feeling but nothing beats the feeling of walking out and performing in front of thousands of people who are there to see you.

Which bands/artists do you like?
We are into bands like Kings of Leon that have a bluesy feel to them.

Steven Tyler is probably the only singer who ties scarves around the microphone. Why does he do that?
Tyler: I had a favourite macramé shirt and an Indian scarf that I wore onstage all the time. The shirt and the scarf were finally in tatters, but instead of throwing them away, I hung them on the micro stand for good luck. Must be the gypsy in me.

How did April 13 come to be known as the Aerosmith Day?
We don’t quite know how it came about but Massachusetts is our home — geographically and spiritually. It is an honour that the state has dedicated a day for us.

How has the band changed over the years since its inception in 1970?
We have grown in our music, but otherwise we are the same bunch of crazy people who have come together to create music.
