Back Into Gear

The guys are starting to get back into tour mode this week. Steven has been in the rehearsal studio every day this week shaking off the dust and getting his chops down. He has been working with some of his sound and light guys on certain cues he wants during certain parts of songs. Like I have said in the past it is like Santa’s workshop down there with Jim Survis and his crew working day and night getting the gear ready for the South America/Mexico swing. Old drumtech and ambassador of goodwill John “McGee” McGarry has lost another 50 or so pounds. This guy is getting so skinny that we may fax him from gig to gig to save money. But seriously folks, if you ever wanted to go on a road trip now is the time.

Joe just spent the week in NYC hanging with his family and checking out his son’s band TAB at the Mercury Lounge. The boys blew the roof off the place and impressed several Sony reps in attendance as well as other record company big wigs. The guys will be playing at TT the Bears Place in beautiful Central Square in Cambridge Massachusetts on Tuesday April 3rd. Be sure to check them out live or visit them at myspace.com/tabtheband.

Next week the guys will all get together to begin full band rehearsals for the tour. You may think why would a band like Aerosmith need to rehearse when they have been together for as long as they have. Well I must tell you that while they call it a rehearsal not a whole lot of rehearsing goes on. It is mainly a time to check out your rig, try new guitars, go over some business for the tour (i.e., T-Shirt designs etc.) get caught up on what everybody did on their time off, have lunch and then maybe just maybe go over a few songs. With the exception of last tour when they were breaking David Hull in I don’t think I have ever heard the guys play Dream On or Walk this Way in rehearsals. Why would they? It would be like you saying, “Ok, today I need to eat breakfast”. They will go over some songs that they haven’t played in a while like Janie or Dude and they will even dust off something that hasn’t been played in years. If it sounds good they will keep it and if not it will get tossed aside for the time being. I do know that the guy’s video tape these rehearsals and it would be cool for the fans to actually see what goes on inside those walls during this time.

Joe has donated one of his gorgeous Gibson “Boneyard” guitars to The Music Rising Charity. The charity is being run by U2’s The Edge to help get instruments back into the schools in New Orleans. So many instruments were lost by Hurricane Katrina. Joe has signed the guitar but will personalize it to the winner. The money raised by the auction will be used to get all kinds of instruments back in the hand’s of kids who are learning to play them. The auction is going through Julian’s Auction House so check it out.

See you on the Road!

John B.
