CD Review - "Rockin' The Joint"

San Francisco Chronicle, CA
October 23, 2005

Rating: 2 - Very Good

Rarely has a band been able to maintain the same level of prowess and swagger as has Aerosmith -- something it managed even during its abusive, hard-living years. This scarf-worthy collection (recorded live at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Cafe in 2002) bears that out, as the Boston group rips through 11 songs that stretch all the way back to its days as a Yardbirds clone. "Train Kept a Rollin' " still careers down the tracks with naughty abandon, while "Walk This Way" has never turned into a cliche, despite that mismatch-up with Run-DMC. To Aerosmith's credit, there are more than a few surprises here, including the rarely performed Fleetwood Mac cover "Rattlesnake Shake," the proto-Metallica "Season of Wither" and the shrill, but always thrilling "Draw the Line." Pouty, often precious, but always reliably irreverent and riff-happy, Aerosmith gives classic rock a good name.
