Film Review
"...'Lightning in a Bottle' is a simple film, but it has lofty ambitions. On the one hand it's a straightforward account of a concert held at New York's Radio City Music Hall on February 7, 2003, featuring blues artists B.B. King, Angelique Kidjo, Buddy Guy, Macy Gray, Steve Tyler, Ruth Brown, and many more. On the other hand, the film - like the concert - aims to provide a comprehensive account of the blues' history. As Martin Scorsese, one of the film's executive producers, says in his introduction, the idea is 'to tell the story of this music'....
Other highlights are unexpected: Mavis Staples singing Blind Lemon Jefferson's haunting See That My Grave is Kept Clean; India.Arie performing Lewis Allan's Strange Fruit; and Aerosmith's resident hip-wriggler, Steve Tyler, who is improbably captivating. There are lulls too, of course, but surprisingly few...."
